Do any of you guys use the dancing hanky in your children's show, in particular, animation sensation combined with impossible hanky. I would think children would love it. I ask because I often see these up for sale. Perhaps too much practice is required or difficult to lug around. Would like to hear about the reactions of 3-10 year olds.
Thanks in advance. |

I get them mixed up, but I have used the one that doesn't use invisible thread. It went over well, but it ate 9 volt batteries and I'm cheap.

Highly recommended! I've used the Impossible Hank (the one without the thread) for many years in kidshows, school shows and library shows. Always generates incredible audience response and amazement. In fact, I would go so far as to say it's one of the best magic prop investments I've ever made.

I use Animation Sensation with The Impossible Hank in my younger kid shows. It is actually an extremely easy routine to transport, set up, perform and clean up.

I've always been partial to "Waltzing Matilda." Kids love it!

The ulTRa dancing hank does take a fair ammount of practice, but BOY is the payoff ever worth it! The reaction from the kids when the silk comes up out of the fishbowl (or whtever you want to use) is priceless! I know it would be expensive, but if you were to combine the imp-hank and the ulTRa hank into one routine, (making it appear as if they were the same hanky) that would be performance gold! You could also use the ballerina-hank (AKA waltzing matilda) in there somewhere I'm sure.
Yes, the practice required is doubtless the reason so many of these are for sale. I know lots of mage's who prefer not to use the zombie due to the practice & effort required to keep from flashing & make it look fluid.....and the ulTRa hank is like the zombie squared!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Quote: I agree. I used to love the Zombie. Kept it in the show for quite awhile. But, when I bought the Don Wayne Dancing Hank, it was just a little too much to ever make it into the show. It was well made and I liked the handling, but it soon became another drawer-filler. Watching the promo for the Ultra, it’s easy to see what was added to the Wayne, but any additional benefit (which there definitely seems to be) requires additional dedication to the learning process. I’ll stick with Matilda. Yeah… I’m that lazy. On 2012-07-02 13:34, The Mighty Fool wrote: Yes, the practice required is doubtless the reason so many of these are for sale. Glorpy is a cool version, and very cheap (about $5). If you think the Dancing Hank is for you, this is a good place to start.

Many thanks guys for taking the time to answer my question. I get great reactions from young kids with "five minutes with a pocket handkerchief" of Quinten Reynolds. I added a couple of bits of my own to it with great success and wanted to further add Animation Sensation and Impossible hanky to a combined routine so the hanky peeps over the case I put it back in after the Reynolds routine. Sucker effect really, we're I miss it popping up as I try and move on with a balloon bit. Then eventually see it and put it on my shoulder and interact with it while continuing with my final routine.

Programming the Impossible Hank is really easy.
The thing to do is time out your routine. Make a note of exactly when the hank has to "peek", where it starts moving, how long it moves, when it stops moving, when takes a bow, etc. Once you've planned your routine like that, simply program the hank to match those timings. I wrote a custom piece of music for my hank. That way, programming the "moves" became even easier, and the music enhances many of his onstage actions. It really is a marvelous effect. The kids go bananas when he "comes to life" and you do the "look don't see" part. And once he starts "showing his character" by dancing on his own, or copying your moves, or doing mischievous things, the adults can't believe it either. I love my Impossible Hank! |

If using it in a kids show(I am assuming it's a birthday party) isn't it too risky with kids rushing forward?

Ha, lol, yes they do go together don't they. Actually my main routines are centred around mentalist with a touch of comedy. But because most people into mentalism are also into magic (except for some elitist in the Penny Forum) family always want me to do something for the kids. I have 4 grand kids and many many great nieces and nephews ranging from new born to 12. And they just keep multiplying. So I'd like to do something special for them this coming Xmas. It will be the first time home for Xmas in 4 years. This just seems to be a natural that kids and adults would enjoy. Again, I thank you all for pointing me in the right direction. And Arthur , I bet you have great music to accompany such a routine.
