Regardless of how good of value this is, $50 is a lot for most of us to shell out for a magic trick. I've been manufacturing and selling effects for many years myself. No matter how great I think the Platt Pad is, $100 is expensive. Period. All this said, you can perform the exact same effect (as x-act) for a fraction of the price with the added bonus of having a normal examinable deck that the spectator can deal himself and that you can use for other effects. I like a slick gimmick as much as the next guy but you don't need it here. Just one guy (who's been performing Grail for years) opinion. I could be wrong.

I have a acaan from Paul Wilson, regular deck they can shuffle blah blah blah. I also have tons of supposed grail acaans that I shelve. I use wilsons. The rest are too much work for the same effect and reaction from specs I do however continue to look at other acaans out of sheer curiousity and hobby value. J |

Platt,
Sorry if I came off wrong. No intent on attacking you. I was just giving my opnion of it as a stand alone trick. No comparisons. Just the value I personally see in it for many reasons. About 5 years ago and back, $19.95 was the american standard for an impulse buy. Sort of an acceptable "loss" if your purchase sucked. (Trick, TV Ad Wonder Gadjet etc.) Lately it has shifted to $29.95 as the standard. So, given this, I feel that $45 is close to that price range where I can accept a bad idea, bad quality whatever reason we throw a trick in the drawer. Would I be happy losing $45...NO! But magic is FLOODED with CRAP so we have a certain expectation of possibly getting burned. So, I felt I got a great deal, great gimmick(s) and great DVD. That simple. I have not seen the other versions or even knew they existed..too busy building and not playing Compared to the MANY tricks I bought back in the 80's and 90's that were in the $75-100 range and threw them straight into the "collection", I felt VERY happy with the price. Anyway, no hard feelings. Just good magic! Thanks Chance

Expensive ?
X act is something you will use and it is something you can not quickly make up so I consider the price more than justified If it was not then how come every convention it's a sell out ? Also even penguin could not believe how quickly this sold out today Take a look on for sale pages you don't see loads for sale unlike another item that I could mention Once you use this in the real world you will see This is one of the Better value items in magic |

BatsMagic - Don't be silly. Send it back and get a replacement! You have a defective X-Act.
X-Act is very well made. I think $45 is a bargain for this trick. This really is something I will use. An automatic CAAN. Sure... the trick can be done other ways, but they're not as good or as clean as X-Act! The only problem with X-Act? I took it out of the house for the first time yesterday and I lost the m----t!#$%! I can't believe it. I hope Mark will sell me another one. Robert |

Why bother with gimmicks for an effect you could do without gimmick and impromptu? This is so strange...

Other than the fact that the spec. can deal the cards with grail, the handlings (pouring cards out of box) look identical. With no gimmicks. I'm curious how anyone who has seen or performed both could argue otherwise.

I have seen Peter Nardi pour the cards out on The Grail and it looked awful , so that tells you a lot how the gimmicks can help . Are the cards always dealt from the face down deck in The Grail ? They probably are but just checking . They certainly are not in Think .

I personally don't feel the need for this gimmick either. As cool as the gimmick is, I'll stick with other methods that are just as effective.
Gimmicks in general can deliver extra clean handling, that's for sure, but it has to be monumentally better then the version that its replacing for me to use it. This is coming from a hobbyist perspective. |

My understanding of the Grail and why I passed is that it required a "mistake". You take the cards out of the box, but you inadvertently left some in the box and need to retrieve them. If a gimmick(s) can make the trick cleaner, that's the power of using gimmicks.
Steve Bedwell had a trick on his TAPED VHS ( now n DVD ) where the spectator shuffled the deck...then he saw that he left some cards in the box and just added them on top. I didn't like it as soon as as I saw it. X-act sounds pretty cool and clean. |

Like jimesw posted earlier, "It wouldn't be as clean without gimmicks. If you think of a way though sell it". I don't think its 'strange'. This effect sold out in just a few hours at the Penguin, it's nowhere for sale on eBay to my knowledge, so that tells you nobody's interested in selling their copy. There's plenty of CAAN's out there, this the best--plain and simple.

And as far as losing the gimmick goes, yes- that is a distinct possibility. The strength of the unit is pretty good, but it still can vanish. Sorry to hear that yours did, Robert. But you really can replace it easily, even if you do not bother camouflaging it. The camouflaging is really not a priority, although it is a nice touch. I have a good stockpile of those things- all magicians should have them! For me this will be a "winter time" only trick, so that I can carry it in my shirt pocket. My summer shirts don't have pockets, and this will not go well in pants pockets for fear of losing the "thing". At least in my opinion. |

. Kirby is the correct spelling but it is no big deal at all. A honest mistake.

Awesome effect. So clean. This is going to stay on the "A" list. I love the instant reset. The only downside is examinability and repeatability, but the dead clean handling is so straight forward that these considerations are more than worth it. There's no "funny stuff" at all that's going to make someone want to examine anything. I'd put this right up there with John Born's Flip Shift, although for different reasons (and Born's is an ACAAN). I'm going to try not purchasing any new magic in 2013 (hopefully that will go better than the same resolution in 2012...), so I'm very glad to have this among the final batch this year, along with Einhorn's Nest of Wallets and Peter Samelson's Heartstrings Gypsy Thread (Bill Abbott Magic). This was a great year for quality magic!

Sorry if this has been asked before but can the "prediction card" be changed from one performance to another. Just curious I have it on order but was curious about any restrictions regarding multiple performances in a restaraunt situation? Was hoping this was not a 2 card deal. My assumption is no and if so what the reset would be. Thanks
