Gus' wife or Gus's wife?
The latter seems barbaric to me.

Don't know - I'd have to see photos in order to compare them.

Nice try there pal, but Zenobia was a royal concubine trained in courtly ways before becoming Conan's queen!

Blame Gus's parents for giving him a name that ends in 's'.

Only at night. You know what they say "Queen in public, Barbarian in the sack!"

Gus's wife is the correct possessive. However, in the case of famous single-name personages, such as Jesus, just an apostrophe is required. Ie. Jesus' mother.

I don't want to make a federal case of this, but from Wikipedia:
Quote:
The Supreme Court of the United States is split on whether a possessive singular noun that ends with s should always have an additional s after the apostrophe, sometimes have an additional s after the apostrophe (for instance, based on whether the final sound of the original word is pronounced /s/ or /z/), or never have an additional s after the apostrophe. The informal majority view (5–4, based on past writings of the justices) has favoured the additional s, but a strong minority disagrees. I wonder who that fifth judge was? Probably Thomas' decision.

I looked into this once -- wish I could remember where. The rule I found was that if the ending "s" has a hard s sound (as in Gus), then it gets an extra s. So "Gus's wife." If the ending "s" has a soft s sound (as in Charles), then one can use just an apostrophe, and *optionally* add an s. So Charles' and Charles's are both acceptable.

Just refer to Strunk & White, "The Elements of Style." It's the standard reference.

Yes, Lobo, I prefer your source to Strunk and White. Hands down.

Actually, the different style dictators have different rules. In particular, the Chicago Manual of Style allows some formations that the MLA doesn't. When I was in grad school, my particular discipline used Chicago though that may have changed now. Chicago used to favor omission of the s after the apostrophe, now it merely allows it. Wikipedia covers some of the differences among style manuals.

Gus's wife is prettier than Gus' wife. But Gus' wife is a good cook, and Gus's wife is a shrew, so I'd say Billy-Joe's wife...she's easy.
