Actually, I don't know why we here in England should be congratulating you lot for kicking us out but there it is. Well done America and may you fellows keep her independence for ever, anyway. Independence, I think is the most important of things for any country, Or any man to, achieve.

Thanks, tommy. If it's any consolation, the Revolutionary War was fought to preserve American rights as Englishmen, and long may the spirit of independence enshrined in the traditions of the Anglo-Saxon people thrive in the British Isles, as well!

Thank you, Tommy, thank you very much!

I love our independence, although we have lost much of it. This time of year, my mind usually goes to how little the King would have needed to do to keep it all together...

Woo Hoo. I still need to get some fireworks. Maybe I can get them on sale. We normally have a pretty decent show here because the casino's pay for it.

The "Star Spangled Banner" begins and ends with a question . . . Here's one for today:

Are we to remain a country of free people, or will we become a country of free things?

He's not to be believed. One cannot be a slave to corporatism, earning a wage, and consumerism and be called "free" in any sense of the word.

What does that have to do with the dichotomy to which I pointed? Can one be free as a slave to the State?

By the way, you are using the word "corporatism" colloquially but incorrectly. "Corporatism" refers to a system of the organization of society, and not to the supposed dominance of joint-stock companies.

There are two "corporate" aspects to corporatism: first, the notion that the society as a whole is conceptualized as a body, with a head, arms, legs, etc. So that all of the individuals and segmented groups in a society are held to work better when, with unity, they work together harmoniously as a single body.

Second, and more important, is the organization of all of society into "corporations." These "corporations" to which corporatists like Mussolini and Moseley refer, are not joint-stock companies, but include labor unions, guilds, professional associations, sporting leagues, and all of the societies, clubs, and organizations in which the citizens of the corporate state associate. It is these "corporations" which interact with each other to govern the state, and the economy.

Thus, in today's corporatist Sweden, wages are set by commissions made up of representatives of the government, the labor unions, and the joint-stock companies.

As Moseley described it, people in a corporatist state will not vote or otherwise participate in the state as individuals, but as members of corporations, e.g. through labor unions and other associations, primarily organized around work places.

Another name for such an assembly is a "Soviet."

The classic manifestation of corporatism is however not communism, but another form of left-wing statism, namely fascism.

Opposed to the idea of statism, is the idea of a free country, in which people participate as individuals. Although the form of the institutions of a free country is important, more important is the character of the people. In order to live as a free country, the people must be free; paradoxically, this means that they must be self-governing, with a strong moral fiber, strong values of patriotism and responsibility, and perhaps above all, a large degree of self-reliance. Such are free people. Those who would trade the uncertainties of freedom for government hand-outs are not free, and never will be.

Good thoughts!

You are not opposed to government hand-outs. You just have opinions about who those hand-outs should go to.

Good thoughts!

Woland do you believe in any taxation? Or do you not believe in the establishment of a military?
