Hello all – I am a new member here from Australia. I have been performing children’s shows for 3 years for schools and private functions. I am by day a full time school teacher and I have seen a decline in literacy and numeracy. My goal now is to produce a motivational magic show with a focus on reading and math.
I am looking at a travelling show for schools. The show is to motivate children in reading and maths. I have begun listing any performances or tricks I believe would best send this message to children (5-12 years old). I now ask my café brethren if you could suggest tricks which could be use for math and reading (spelling). Can’t wait to hear from you all. |

The absolute best spelling game I have ever seen is Jolly Rogers "ridiculous spelling game". It is ridiculously priced at $15. and can make a large auditorium of kids scream, cheer, clap, and laugh all at the same time. I think it would work with 4th grade to adult audiences. This is my secret weapon, and I hope no one in my area buys it.

I've got to second that, Al! I saw a video of the Konvention performance and it is a really great game.
Just a bit farther down the Café menu is the Magical Equations forum. You could find some math stuff there. Ed |

My off the cuff suggestion is to create a different show for each subject. combining reading & math has the danger of having too many "talking points" for the kids to remember.
math - magic square 7X13=21 (old vaudeville skit, to show how you can be cheated if you don't know your math!) |

Al can you give more details on the Ridiculous spelling game you are talking about..... I went to the website but the description is short and not a lot of detail.

The Magic Square can make a good demonstration (although I think many people tune out on this one).
The problem with most Math tricks is that they use Math to do the Magic. So for any teaching to happen you would have to tip the method. Hopefully someone will read this and decide to prove me wrong. There are some interesting math tricks or happenings that kids can get into. They are not Magic but could be entertaining. I remember being most interested in this sort of thing around 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Here is a link to a number of sites that offer possible material that could be worked into something. http://www.google.com/search?client=safa......bih=1000 Good luck. -Mary Mowder |

Two teams of four kids each having a letter on either side of a giant card. So that makes two teams of four kids each having two letters. You stand in the middle and announce a word, and whoever makes that word first gets a point. There are 19 words and the team with the most points at the end wins.

I can see it working very well and being a ton of fun. Then you asked about Breeds book and I went and pulled it out. Sure enough there it was! HOW DO I SKIP OVER THIS STUFF!!! Glad for this thread. JR's routine uses letters on BOTH sides of the cards to spell the words during the "competition". And has many more words available for the game (longer game). And ends with a big round of applause for all the helpers. JB's routine uses ONE side of the cards during the game and about half as many words to spell. However, the end of JB's routine he has a very cool ending...he has the helpers turn their cards over to show the backs and a message for the audience is there. John also shares a second idea for the ending which has merit. I will be adding this to my show! Thanks WW for asking the question. Thanks to Al and all those who posted this routine! I didn't even know I had this sitting in my "files". THANKS! |

Jolly Rogers version comes with a very nice set of large cards that is a steal for $15.

Sounds like an interesting effect, and it sure does sound like a steal for $15.00. I am going to have to pick this up and see if I can fit this one in. Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds like an easy 5 minute routine.

It should run from 5 to 7 minutes. I would do it as a finale with the boys against the girls, or teachers against the students.

Two shows, not one with combined themes Reading and Math.. or pick just one and make it interactive, informative and a fun reinforcement of the elements of the topic. The suggestions made above are good ones.

Well to begin with - A HUGE thank you to Al Angello, Ed_Millis, Wes Holly, MagicB1S, magicgeorge, Mary Mowder, DeWayne and Steve Petra for your posts. They have been VERY helpful indeed.
DeWayne and Al and MagicG I do have John Breeds Book with 'the post game', however I will trial it and Jolly Rogers "ridiculous spelling game". I want to ensure I have the best for the kids. Mary I also agree 'magic square' could have students tune out - I will trial it only with the greade 5 and 6 students - may have a few come on stage with calculators to add the differnt directions on the square (I have 1 year to trial the effects/reactions) However Mar I would like my show to be for Grades 1-6. I want to have the 1 show to appeal to all the ages 5-11yrs old - I would rather not have to perform 2 different shows. and thank you for the link too - very interesting stuff. MagicB1S hahah fully agree - what a price $15! Steve P you comment stikes a chord as I have debated over doing a single READING or MATH show as I could alternate shows each year while traveling - if any other school/library performers would like to advise on this please chime in anytime. Thank-you to all. , |

The original game "STOP" is not the creation of John Breeds, it is in the book "Profit at the Party" by David Hallet.

I am very disappointed! I purchased the Ridiculous Spellin Game form Jolly Rodger for $25 (New price apparently)
Now I certainly didn't expect to get $25 of materials. (I got 8 sheets of card stock witha letter on each side about $3 total of materials) However I thought the money would be for the routine and bits of business that make this piece entertaining. Instead there is ONE paragraph telling you how to set up the game. That's it! No routine, no jokes, no video link, no suggestions at all. I assume the other posters must have saw this performed, one poster even talks about JR's "routine" but anybody who buys this like I did is going to be sitting there scratching their heads saying "This is supposed to be fun?" What would be so hard about giving the purchasers a private video link to a performance? It couldn't be public obviously because this could be duplicated in a few minutes. Anyway. if someone wants to PM me with any tips I would really appreciate it. Kevin kevin@hallsofmagic.com PS. I developed a new concept for my Math-A Magic show. I performed it first time last November, have not done ANY advertising but have already booked 13 shows just through word of mouth! If you are not living in my areas (Minnesota & Vegas) PM me and I'll fill you in on how much fun it is and what I am doing. |

White Wizard,
For reading shows you can't go wrong with our Interactive Routine called "Hot Air Balloon." That's available from our website at http://www.arthurstead.com. Also, we have a comprehensive set of lecture notes called "Create a Profitable Reading Program ... on a Shoe-String Budget." This contains a wealth of information on how to create and structure reading shows, how to add educational substance to existing routines, etc. Plus 11 powerful, audience-tested routines from our own school shows (with contributions from Sammy Smith, Steve Taylor, Duane Laflin, David Ginn, Dan Harlan and more). The latter is not available on our website yet ... but anyone who is interested can PM me for more details. Arthur Stead |

P.S. For reading show performers in the USA who use an Axtell Magic Drawing Board, check out our reading routine called "Abe Lincoln." It features pre-recorded voice responses set to music (so you don't have to be a vent to perform it), and has a very powerful message about reading biographies.

I find depending on the spelling or math skills of adults or children to be dangerous.
In my experience, displays like a magic square bore most audiences. I know it doesn't have to be boring, but I have 3 different magicians take on the magic square, and they all claim t solve the problem, but to me they don't. The only time I have seen a magic square go over well was with a science/math crowd. I just ordered JR's Ridiculous Spellin Game, I hope I have the success others seem to have with it. I spoke with JR and he is happy to send me a video with the purchase. |
