Being stuck in a certain routine for a long period of time can make a person feel as though they serve no purpose in life. The longer this goes on, the more it cements it in your mind. I know personally, I have battled with thoughts on several occasions and had isolated myself from everyone including my wife eventually which led to divorce. It also led to very bad anxiety attacks. Its not a matter of having family around, its more of a matter of feeling like you contribute in a positive way with your existence rather than just going through the same motions day after day after day. If you don't make a change of some sort, it will continue to drag you down.
If your mind stays in the same negative place, it will continue to corrode. Its finding something to initiate that change that has been a problem, for me anyway. Also, people with these problems don't tend to reach out to people close to them or even doctors for fear of the stigma of being labeled. I swallowed my pride and did to my doctor. Some people fear the stigma so much or are in denial that they wont seek help and the only way to be rid of the problem that hurts so much is to solve it themselves. I think the only way to really comprehend the magnitude is to have been through it. I hope this helps Bruce! |

Roslyn - Im not arguing with you at all, just handing in a few thoughts...
Like most people who've commented so far, their families are one, or several of these reasons BUT If you have a family like mine, my family wouldn't care if I commited suicide tomorrow. Since I was old enough to understand, they have told me that Im worthless, stupid, and a burden to them. When I contracted cancer (first time), I was told by my own mother that I was a 'stupid cow' for 'daring to get sick'. As a teenager, I attempted to commit suicide once out of pure love for them, so they would no longer have to deal with me. that's one reason now that I NEVER discuss my health with my family or friends. Some of them don't even know what happened to me in events in December. These are the people who Im sure would fawn over my coffin at my funeral, but would be glad to be rid of me. There are people Ive known that died prematurely. Rosyln, believe me when I say this - I'd take their place in heartbeat if it were possible. Just because I have attempted it, didn't mean I don't care about those people. On a more selfish note, I do not want myself to suffer, either physically or mentally. I am already living with a couple of painful conditions. If I decide that my life is no longer worth living FOR ME (we all have different ideas of what this might mean), then I want to take control and decide to end my suffering. I might not be in danger of those conditions taking my life, but who wants to live 40+ years of suffering. Its quality for me, not quantity. |

Don't mean to derail the topic, but I think this is somewhat related in the sense that it's about someone who perhaps had many reasons to want to give up, but fought back. Might seem a bit corny and not sure how many have seen it before, but I like happy endings every now and again:

I've corresponded with you before, and find you are a WONDERFUL woman, that deserves NOTHING but the BEST! Just so you know, I have come to the point of suicide, TWICE. I know the drill, so to speak. I have come away a better person. You have a significant other that (I sure hope) appreciates you! Focus on that. I don't want to hijack this thread...just know...someone here CARES! Don't go away! We need you! You have so much to offer. Please? Doug |

Doug - I have run out of time, energy and thoughts to offer this board, that's reason I post so seldom now. I turned off my instand message feature due to recieving some rather nasty messages. Post your email if you want to chat, and I'll email you from my personal email account

I have fairly strong existential leanings... I can't remember who said it, but it was stated that one of the draw-backs to existentialism is suicide... that if you consider life is futile (which I do), then for some that's hard to come to terms with...however, I think that happens when people learn of existentialism and then decide to "be one"... whereas I have always thought that, and only later found out that I share quite a few beliefs that tie in with existentialism...
anyway... 1) life is not worth living if you decide that its not 2) life becomes more worthwhile when you work out what contributes to that feeling of authenticity/contentment 3) following the norm because you are too scared/worried what others might think of your choices will eventually eat you from the inside out so life is futile, and always shall be - human constructs for both good and evil will always exist, Eutopia shall never appear. To realise that life and people only matter if you choose it to be so. Mental health issues not withstanding. If I could do one thing in life, it would to honestly make mental-health issues be solved. Allow yourself to try everything you have always wanted to. The scale of it does not matter. Don't play the guitar cos you want to be cool. Play the guitar cos you love it. Don't label yourself an "artist", just be truthful in what you do and in how you share it with others. Do not be false. Cancer, mental health issues, debt - lost, cared, loved, helped, fought for people, not giving up on them - done all these things and more, faced them all either by myself or with others. Done what feels right/authentic to me at each point as best I could. Will do again when/if any of it happens in the future. so for me, 3 things that make life worth living 1) other people sharing their version of life/their truth 2) me being as much "me" as I can at any given point 3) do things because I choose to love them...same with people

Iain, I do not accept the existentialism label ……
Anyway …… The rest of what you said is spot on! Call it what you wish…… And yes, many thrive on the drama of misery |

Familiar with the theory……just don’t accept that the universe and its contents exist for one’s egocentric pursuits or views. It’s a way one can look at life but the universe looks back at what is frequently no more than an annoying little gnat……..Like a grain of sand on a beach we play a part...................
Make the best of what is but never forget how little you matter. An exaggerated self-worth leads to depression or mania. |

Ah, but then it sounds like to me that you're attributing some kind of cosmic awareness...i've not experienced that, so I can't comment on it...
I would say that everything we do is egocentric, one way or the other...

Life is worth living so that you may experience:
1.The genuine laugh of a child. 2.A goosebumps moment. 3.The next orgasm. Sometimes magic can help create these! |
