I finally purchased Bob Cassidy's Mental Miracles, and I must say it was a real treasure to watch and learn. Anyone who has been here for a while is certainly aware of Bob Cassidy, his insights and advice and his ebooks.
I have purchased some of his ebooks from Lybrary.com and use some of his material in my shows. But, it was an absolute pleasure getting to watch him perform a show (not a series of effects for a lecture) and then break it all down. One of the things I appreciated was how natural he moves around the stage, reaches for bits of paper, a deck of cards or whatever. Equally is impressive is how he collects the information he needs. Everything is natural. Seems like every time I perform 4DT, I have to slow down and have a run through in my head of what I am doing with the envelopes. The fluidity and naturalness really stood when I was fast-forwarding a little further into the presentation. I think Chronologue will become a part of my show, and I would love to add the card memorization work, too. I know this has been around for a while, but it is new to me. Bobby

Watching some of the live TV spots really helped me with the way to do 4DT, seeing it done made it so much easier than just reading it (from a performance point of view) I like to change things up a little but it's hard to stray given how strong it all is

I will venture to say that nobody alive (or dead) has watched Mental Miracles more times then I have. Its my comfort movie, my motivation, my.....ugh, obsession (lol). With that said, my favorite part of the DVD is Mr. Cassidys natural style....nothing is forced, yet you can tell he is working to gleam the information (from spectators point of view). I stole one thing from Mr. Cassidy (besides 4DT) and that is how he is so flippant with the billits.....watch how he treats the first billit in names/places.....classy without trying to be.

No, problem, Decomposed. However, since it has been around for a while, I did not want to review the effects, rather I wanted to share my reaction to it.

I think being natural is one of the most important and yet difficult things to learn.
The live TV versions of some of the effects in the show can be found at http://www.youtube.com/TheMastermindreader Thanks for the nice comments, Bobby. Best- Bob |

I agree. Bob's the maestro on stage. Doing your own material works wonders. My copy of MM got all scratched up.
I need to get another. Well worth buying it twice though. J |

I believe that this is dead on and really, can only be achieved through experience. Thanks for the thoughts Bobby, Bobs work is always a a treat to watch. Darren

I agree, and this being "natural" can only be achieved through experience" really only comes through performing live. I often hear so many people say and speak about theory, creativity and so on, but who have never really performed live at all or only a handfull of times a year. This is where being natural and being entertaining - bringing your mentalism to life, really comes into play.
Practicing over and over again in controlled environments are no where near the same as performing live. Many here often discuss how mentalism can appear boring or flat in performance or on television. It isn't and doesn't have to be. So many put the emphasis on executing the effects, that they spend little if any time of being a performer (first), and then evolving into a natural performer. This Diddleman guy on America's Got Talent, has very good mechanics and execution but the judges feel he just missing something. They're right, he's missing being an entertainer. Take away the execution of the effect, and he's just a guy standing on stage. The effect is all he's got and everything is riding on the effect. he needs to be a performer, to be entertaining, to become a natural. It's also often discussed here, "whats the best move, cover or disguise of the dirty work"? One of the best misdirections, moves or covers is being a natural entertainer, as you see in Bobs work. It can't be formally taught, as it has to be learned and the executed over and over again in live performances to get to that level of efficiency. Anyone could throw anything at Bob in a performance and he could handle it without a doubt. Bob's DVD and the t.v. appearances are a masterclass on this. It is this that makes mentalism not boring, play big and be amazing or mindblowing. |

Just wanted to clarify the reason my MM is all scratched is attributable to my kid ripping it out of the DVD player. Nothing to do with receiving it that way.

Mindpro,
Good insights. I don't remember where I read it, but it was basically saying the same thing you articulated: The only real way to practice is by performing live. To me, practicing and rehearsing are different things. Practice involves repeatedly executing any action that needs to take place to achieved the desired outcome, and rehearsing is when I walk through a show, the patter, the staging and all of that. Too often, I do not rehearse enough. However, I think my experience working in a magic shop (Daytona Magic), teaching a Sunday School class, preaching in a small church and performing live has put me in a position where I can think on my feet. But, I still need to pull it all together with the naturalness thing. I have to work on that, and I'll get a couple of chances in the next two weeks. Bobby

I fell in love with Chronologue. It's so powerful and is not a card trick.
Richard Osterlind does it and adds a deck of cards. They count through them, there are only 51 cards and their card isn't there. It's used to convince them that the card you reveal is the missing card from the deck. I haven't found them having any doubt. But I don't really have the experience to analyze the pro's and con's of adding Richard's idea. Does anyone use Richard's method? |

Before I created Chronologue there were a lot of diary effects that used playing cards. And a lot more have come out since. The whole point of my effect is that NO DECK OF CARDS is used. Good thoughts, Bob |
