Recieved a Morgan Expanded Shell from Bob Solari today and the first thought I had when I looked at the coin was, "That's a nice thin, crisp, sharp rim." If you look at the photo provided, you can see that in other coins, notably the Tango and sadly, the Belmont which cost me quite a bit and a lot of headache, the rims are considerably wider than on a regular Morgan.

The side view shows the coverage of the shell over a regular Morgan and is comparable to Belmont's coin and extends a little bit more than the Lassen or Tango.

There is very little play in the nested coin which gives it a tighter fit than say the Tango or Keuppers, but give it more tolerance than the Schoolcraft, Lassen, or Belmont. Some coins will not fit into those shells because they are machined to much tighter specs.

The milling on the edge is sharp and crisp. The portrait is in a nice relief with no distortion, unlike say the Keuppers which has an almost concave feel to the field and portrait on the coin.

After playing with the coin, I cleaned off the artificial patina and polished it myself. I prefer a sort of brushed metal look, atypical in most coins. I'll retouch the patina to where I want it to be tomorrow.

I also used to have a Johnson Expanded Morgan which I sold a long time ago and a Sasco one which I think I threw out of the car window while I was driving somewhere.

This is an excellent expanded shell and with this over my TT or 3CM I can to a nice EXPLOSION. It's running $150.00 which is a great price considering the workmanship.

Yeah, I figure hacks are always looking for the next great, new thing. This isn't it. They really don't care about a utilitarian workhorse.

An Expanded Morgan allows you to to so much, but it's never really seen as anything other than an ordinary coin. This gimmick looks about as ordinary as you can get, and that's high praises.
