Beloved of spiritualists and bored teenagers on a dare, the Ouija board has long been a source of entertainment, mystery and sometimes downright spookiness. Now it could shine a light on the secrets of the unconscious mind.

Using just one person, I could almost believe that it was the "unconscious intelligence," -- almost. But, when several people use the board, one would have to then suggest that one person's unconscious intelligence is stronger than the other people involved, especially when the other people may not agree with the answer. The conclusions of the scientists may be one possibility (when considering the 65% accuracy), but another conclusion might be just as valid – that the “spirit world” knew the answers that the study subject did not. Just sayin’.

We would expect several people using a Ouija board to behave like several people doing pretty much anything else: there tends to be one alpha dog and a handful of followers. That aspect doesn't make the unconscious intelligence hypothesis any less plausible.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

Quote: It might, if your "alpha dog" didn't know the correct answer and one of the others did. I was responding mostly to the 65% accuracy rate, vs the same questions on a computer keyboard. Of course, the "alpha dog" theory could also support the "spirit world" theory as well, if the "spirit" were working through just one of the participants. On 2012-07-10 18:09, Quinn wrote: We would expect several people using a Ouija board to behave like several people doing pretty much anything else: there tends to be one alpha dog and a handful of followers.
