I've heard "Magic is dead" since the 50's.
Magic will be around for a long time. Just about every KID loves magic. Every Decade, someone rises to the top! -Dennis

I don't think magic is dead but I believe its changing and for example the presentations are less artistic which I believe I the best way to present magic the presentations are now more "cool" the younger magicians are tying to be like dynamo or david blaine which I think is the wrong way to go

Who is Dynamo?
Magic is not dead...Max wrote a whole book about it and people have been saying that for 150yrs. Magic lives on. Magic will live on and as long as people have imagination and a drive to perform then magic will survive as it has for thousands of years. Mobius |

I think associating CA's show narrative and concluding that magic is almost dead is an ignorant observation.
And because you express silence is consent is just plain stupid - what did you expect? All 51 thousand + members to chime in on your hypotheses in order to feed your ego. What, a press conference. Sorry, magic is most certainly NOT almost dead as you feel. |

Magic is defiently not dead and thanks to Angel and Dynamo there's a big revival! True there is a big change in trends but this has happened everywhere and in everything. It's a bit like what happened to photography when digital cameras started to pop up. Many companies identified the change, changed their products whilst witholding their qulaity and identity thus surviving and overcoming the change. Those that opted not to go with the change died! IMO magic should not be about keeping secrets it should be about the person being mystified by the artists performance and presentation even though they 'know' the secret!
So this is magic!

They said magic was dead in the 50's with the advent of television. It's neither dead nor dormant. It's alive and well. Just because we don't see everyone performing square circles and die boxes doesn't mean magic is on it's last leg. Magic is evolving. That is the way it should be. We need to worry when magicians stop thinking outside of the box. I remember when Doug Henning first came onto the scene years ago and took heat for not wearing a tux. He just wouldn't stand the test of time..yet here we are some 30 years later talking about how many of us were inspired by him.I would bet there are more 'magicians' now than a decade ago. The interest is UP - we see it in our sales - we all have different interests and the same applies to magic - variety IS the spice of life. Will we ever agree - nope but that is okay - that is what makes us individualits - it's what creates originality.
So for those who are trying to bury magic as a dead art I can only suggest you look for the positives in your love for magic and why we do what we do...if you can't be positive about your art perhaps it's time to do something else. |

I did an outdoor program at 10AM for adults at Schnable Lake Campground near Martin, Michigan a few Sundays ago. It was on a basketball court, folks living in this community simply pull up on their golf carts to watch. They don't even get out of their carts. It was like doing a magic show surrounded by a modern day wagon train. Then they pass the hat, I was told they usually collect $50 to $100 for the various people that have appeared there over the years (singers, book authors, speakers, vents, etc.). When they passed the hat after my Gospel magic show (and the program did go very well I must admit), there was a whopping $177. Magic IS alive and well and still very much appreciated!

These last several posts are really uplifting- thanks all! It is so easy to get beaten down and drift from something we have always enjoyed. Words like those above inspire us to forge ahead and ignore the naysayers. The rampant exposure today is one of those "beaters" for me- it seems to be ruining the art.
And yet, a month or so ago I was "conned" into doing a performance for about 20 young adults. I didn't have the time to prepare that I would have liked, and so chose card magic since the "props" were easy to get at Walmart, even though I felt card magic was probably at the top of the "cheesy" list. Once I got into it, I had such fun, and the group was truly "into" the magic! EVERY effect was well received- they loved it! This was a great lesson to me that magic is still very magical to many people, including the young adult group. As Mark Twain said, "the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated". Jim

Kevin - Maybe it is time for you to step away from magic if you sense that it is no longer a viable commercial marketing vehicle given your expertise.

Magic was functionally "dead and buried" through the 1950s-early/mid 1960s--and then the buried seeds of magic germinated and bloomed.

What on earth difference would it make? I wish magic would die. I would love to be the only magician on the planet. The only guy who knew what a thumbtip was...
What is it that concerns everyone? Do you need other magicians to create a market for you? Magic was pretty dead in the 60's. It was a great time to be a magician. |

You'd never know Magic was dying from my performance last night! 15 people made the most noise I have heard in a LONG time! It was like an L & L Publishing audience! I'm not really that good, either, I just am able to tell a good story.
No rehearsal, nothing. I just ad-libbed the whole thing, and kept it to a half hour. I'm with you Pop, magic being "dead" is great for business! Ha! Doug |
