I know it seems early, but my Christmas bookings are coming in thick and fast. I know that come September, I'll be so busy, I won't have a lot of time to work on my 2012 Christmas Show, so I plan to do this in the next few weeks. I'd really like to add at least one new Christmas routine to my collection this year. I already have most of the popular ones.
What are your favourite Christmas routines, props, etc? I'm particularly thinking of routines which can be adapted with a Christmas theme and/or props or routines which I can read up on. Of course, if there are any new products or props, I'd be happy to look at them - but most likely I already own them! One thing I don't have is a snowstorm prop. I've used the traditional fan, which is very effective, but I might decide to splash out on a pricey prop if it's really good! In the meanwhile, I'll be leafing through my Tarbell course, where I might well find just what I'm looking for. Thanks, Potty |

Why not recite Twas the Night Before Christmas? The kids love hearing it.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, I can't use any of my Christmas props for school or library "Holiday" shows. No Christmas tree, no Santa silks, no red-nosed reindeer ... no nothin! Initially I thought, "Well, at least I can make my sponge snowman appear from a dove pan." But I was wrong. According to the school officials here, you can't use a snowman. Want to know why? Because it might be offensive to overweight fat people!

I say why can't you say christmas--christmas--christmas? I say it all the time and I am an atheist! Arthur, I would tell the school officials they're nuts. I don't get offened seeing a snowman...their fun to look at. Like Markymark said this world has gone mad!

Gman, if I told the school officials they're nuts, I'll never work again! But I agree with you and Markymark 100%: The whole world has gone mad!

Torn and Restored Napkins, using school approved holiday design napkins. There are other party supply items that might get by the self-proclaimed politically correct censors described in The Wizards' Journal #14 - Magic With Themed Party Goods, things designed with holly or red and white stripes, or bells, etc.
"Popcorn Popper" from The Wizards' Journal #7 can seque into a snowstorm ending. "Ring into Nest of Boxes" from The Wizards' Journal #11 OR "Fellowship of the Ring" from the Wizards' Journal #22. The ABC Production Boxes from The Wizards' Journal #20 are themed around a Jack in the Box... or is that too sexist? Merry X-ed-out-mas, everyone!

Here's what I do for the "night before Christmas" Basicly, I'm trying to tell the story, but I never get very far without SOMEthing happening, forcing me to magicly fix it and start from the begining, or a few lines back.
The "mouse which isn't stirring" shows up and there's a fun look-dont-see routine The children nesting in their beds are the kids in the audience who get into a 'nestled' position, and I explain what 'sugar-plums' are but other things like happy-meals, M&M's, Doritos' etc, keep appearing on the cards and I say them, do a double take and say "Who's the wiseguy out there who was thinking of that??? C'mon everyone, it's SUGAR PLUMS!" We finally get the sugar-plums right, so I start over and that silly mouse puts in another apperance I bring up 2 kids for "Mama in her kercheif and I in my cap" but of course, they have neither. (at this point I groan & say "WHY isn't anything going right today?!?") I use paper tears to make the cap & kercheif. Start over and.....you guessed it, the mouse shows up again. "when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter" A loud clown horn honks. "Ahem...there arose such a clatter" A cow moos I ask the kids if they know what a "clatter" is, and they make it! "Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutters, and THREW UP!" I stop, go over and check in the book, then return and say "THE SASH!" This gets BIG laughs from the parents. And it goes on and on, ending with a funny holiday hat routine, and a bubblestorm.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I do the exact same show as normal. About a minute in, I stop mid-routine and say 'wait a minute, you booked the CHRISTMAS show didn't you?'
Then I flip the rattiest, most unimpressive piece of tinsel you have ever seen over the edge of my box and continue as normal. Huge laugh. Job done. This also works for pirate shows (use a crappy old pirate flag), Halloween shows (cheap plastic spider), Easter shows (bloke on a cross) I should point out that you have to be me to get away with this.

Mighty Fool I would pay to see that routine.
That said, I love kimmos approach. I don't change my show but I do include the recetation for my own amusement as much as anything. Some vents do it as a duet with their puppet which I might try this year. I don't like all the seasonal props and tricks and never use any.

For those who do not use holiday themed magic, you are right. It is not necessary. You CAN just do the same routine you always do. I did that for years. Then I decided to put together a Christmas themed show and I have to say, it is a much easier sell and I can hear the interest in potential customers voices on the phone when I state that my entire show is Christmas themed. Even my side table has a white pole decorated like a candy cane etc.
that's when I decided to put together a Halloween themed show and now October is my biggest month for performing. I make so much $$$ in October I could literally take the next two months off. For those of you that use my "Flash Appearing Birthday banner" have recently produced the same effect with my Halloween banner: Tie a yellow and black silk together, pull them apart and a 36" banner appears that says "HAPPY HALLOWEEN". They are for sale on my web site now. In November I will be making available the third in the flash appearing banner series with a Flash Appearing Merry Christmas Banner. Anyone interested, PM me your e mail address and I will add you to my list to notify when they come in.

Tommy I was reviewing your site and see that you offer a lot for Halloween routines. You'll be hearing from me soon. As I mentioned I'm looking to revamp my so called Halloween show into something bigger and better, and hopefully profitable!

Hey TommyJ,
I love Halloween too! On the east coast, Halloween was our busiest season. Entire schools and library patrons would show up in costume, and they loved our Halloween programs. We also did a lot of preschool business with a fabulous Halloween Safety Show. Got written up in the newspapers, made lots of money, etc. Alas, now we live on the left coast, where Halloween cannot be uttered. Also no talk of ghosts, witches, skeletons, carved pumpkins (although a non-carved pumpkin is deemed OK). Potty, to answer your question: According to the P.C. Police, it's alright to mention reindeer in a Christmas show. What is forbidden is to mention a red-nosed reindeer. And, therefore, also the name Rudolph. To date, no explanation has been given. |
