Hi All,
Long time lurker here so I feel like I know some of you already and I hope to get to know everyone in the workshop over time. I've been interested in magic for over 30 years but I don't really perform and prefer to watch and collect magic items. However, after building so many music boxes and simple automatons my wife begged me to stop telling me we don't need any more boxes!! However, I have gotten around the loophole by now building magic tricks and and she has been pretty impressed with my first trick - the Astro Ball Cabinet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUBrtTdvuJc (not my box but an example if you're not familiar with the illusion.) I'm now looking for another project to work on so would welcome any ideas. Nothing too large (that could contain a glamorous assistant)please and nothing that is ultra new or top secret (as I might not be able to figure it out) Something around a shoe box size maximum would be great and something that's quite old hat so could be discussed but an effect that still looks great to a layman. Thanks

One of the staple effects of small prop magic is the Die Box. There are several variations, so the build can be as challenging as you want it to be.
I would love to see your Astro Ball Cabinet, should you have the opportunity to post a photo. Welcome to the Café (as a non-lurker!), and welcome specifically to the workshop. Great folks here! ~michael

The Square Circle illusion is relatively easy to build, as there are hundreds of versions of it. Here is just one of many:

I've got a variety of props you can build in my "Hardboard and Duct Tape Magic" e-Books. Sure, there are boxes, but if you get tired of boxes, there are plaques, trays, screens, white boards and other things you can make to get some more variety into your magic.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and warm welcome. I'll post some pics of the box soon Michael - I just want to paint the inside first.
As for projects, I like to make solid boxed, with lids and without too many doors or hinges. I bought a small plastic Die Box as a blueprint recently but this isn't really the next build for me. The square circle's not for me either as I like tricks magic that almost performs itself so this doesn't quite fit the bill. I've seen your Elevator Box discussed on another thread Jim and I think this is the one for me (magicnook is your site isn't it) I actually bought a trick from you about 2 years ago and you might notice the same Paypal address popping up in your account again. I think this would be great for Halloween and I can use one of the many empty boxes I've already made as the base for this project. Just one question - can I hold the box at the side throughout the box filling up or do you have to put a hand underneath?

The good old tip over box is still a fooler, and very versatile. I like Mikame's version, which is smaller, and the load chamber is beveled on the sides for better viewing angles.

I've just bought a very reasonably priced copy on Amazon so even if it's the wrong book I'm sure to enjoy it. Looking over my bookmarks from 2010 it was actually you that got me building magic with this thread - http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=109 I thought I remembered that top hat Looking at your store it's all coming flooding back to me now....your work is amazing. I usually paint, varnish or veneer by boxes but I love the oriental styling you sometimes make and was wondering how you get those images on there. Are they something you can buy or is it a trade secret? Anyway, now I'm not sure what to make so I think I better think it out again.

Yes, that is the correct book.
The images that I use are mostly ones that I make. They are waterslide decals that I print for my use. Anyone can do this, but the processes and techniques, I've developed and honed over several years of trial and error. I'm not ready to tip the full mitt just now. I have also been known, although very seldom, to use some I've bought. There are advantages and limitations to either method.

Ah - Had never heard of waterslide decals before. This gives me something to look out for on my travels and it's nice to know that if I see an image I really love it may be possible to apply it to a box.

It was the first effect I made with my dad (long since passed), so it has a special place in my memory. Mr. Mikame is showing a great routine in your posted video, much more involved than a simple production. But it shows how versatile this box can be...in the right size and in the right hands.

I have always been fond of a larger window flip over box for a rabbit, I still use one in my act. The animal can be seen through the front window until the last second until the box is flipped - very effective.
