I know Hen Fetsch invented the Mental Epic routine that uses the one ahead principle but did he invent the principle or just the effect? Can anyone provide credit info on the one ahead principle?

According to Bart Whaley: A one-ahead mentalist card trick (involving sighting the next card while naming and showing the previous one) was used and exposed by magicians as early as 1693.

I know that one ahead principle in conjunction by billet working was depeloved by a spirit medium, but I have to do some research to find his name.
