One last thing I forgot to mention. In his lecture, Jeff D. showed clips from his upcoming Comedy Central Special. It is Halloween themed and looks like the most creative work he's done in years. Airs October 7, and the DVD is already available for pre-order.
That's all. Really. |

Just looked it up, it's called: "Jeff Dunham: Minding the Monsters" and according to Amazon, it will be released October 9th.
Could be a great year for vent vids, isn't Jay Johnson's for the "Two and Only" supposed to be coming out this fall too?

Hia everyone! The 2012 Vent Haven International Ventriloquists' ConVENTion is just a fond memeory now, but WOW! what a ConVENTion!!
We had 610 attendees from 10 countries, had wonderful reviews about the new hotel (Cincinnati Airport Marriott) and over 125 "red dotters" (first time attendees). Dates for next year are July 17-20, 2013 at the Cincinnati Airport Marriott. You can reserve your rooms with the Marriott starting on August 6! See you there!! Oh, I want to thank my staff for making me look good again! ...what a wondeful bunch of people to work with! Mark markwade@kidshowvent.com |

So here comes the old debate again - clean vs adult.
Keith - what Taylor said HIS PERSONAL CHOICE (my emphasis) was to keep the bedroom and bathroom out of the act. Also happens to be MY PERSONAL CHOICE. Taylor never said anything about what others did, only what he chose for himself. If you want to curse in your act or listen to those that do, that is also a personal choice - as it is mine NOT to listen. Taylor also said he is a comedian who happens to be a Christian, not a Christian comedian. He works all sorts of venues, and chooses re be clean in all of them. Getting back to the convention - the best thing I got out of Taylors lecture was that I don't have to be better than Jeff, Terry or anyone else. I only have to be the best ME I can be at that moment. That was also emphasised when Jimmy Nelson said success should be measured differently by individual. For one it is selling out arenas but for another, it could be being the best birthday ventriloquist around, or the fact that you bring smiles to seniors. Success is different for all. I realize how people like the lectures is a subjective thing but for me, this was the best convention ever because I learned so much. All the lectures and seminars gave me tons to think about. I came away with lots of books and dvd's and now the homework really begins.

Just back after having to take care of a weeks worth of work in one day but now that I am caught up I too can jump in and say this conVENTion was a blast. Everything that Bob has reported is spot on and the accolades that my friend Steve said about me is keeping this big head I recieved from Mark "Hes a great man" Wade from deflating. I must say I was really taken off guard by Mark and it is wonderful and humbling at the same time. I love our art and have worked to bring as much information to everyone about same as I possibly can. I just can't express how much the reciept of the W.S. Berger Distinguished Service Award means to me. Thank you to all of you , my friends , who have helped by visiting and sharing with me on Ventriloquist Central so that I could keep the site going. I just can't wait for next year. remember it is only 51 weeks away. By the way Steve Hurst my webmaster and brother from another mother, also recieved the award and he too has worked tirelessly so I really want all to give him his share of the accolades. Unfortunately he was not able to attend conVENTion this year but rest assured he will be there next year.

Next year - definitely next year - I have the dates, I will be putting in for the time off as soon as possible.
Got to go, been thinking it's time for one of my figures to go to his forever home in the museum.

I'm finally back in London and have made enough of a jetlag recovery to participate coherently in this thread.
I wanted to give a big thanks to all those who made the convention possible. It really is such a great event. It was a pleasure to perform in the international show and I must thank Stevo for organising and putting on such a high quality show. Stevo works really hard to make sure the international show is a creative and different experience. I only wish I got to see more of the other two acts (Andrea Fratellini and Alpar Fendo) the bits I glimpsed through the side curtain were fantastic! The highlights for me were: Alan Semok's lecture on acting. Alan Semok is extremely talented and during this lecture he ran a couple of scripts twice showing that with heightened acting skills the ventriloquist act becomes an engaging two way conversation rather than just the delivery of lines. Sammy King's lecture on Coaching yourself. The legendary Sammy King absolutely lived up to the hype. He really understands what makes a strong ventriloquist act. His analysis of videos of the pros really demonstrated that we can all view our work critically and tighten up our acts. Taylor Mason's lecture was very inspiring. He spoke passionately how he has attained a good work life balance. Bob Baker absolutely killed at the open mic. I believe he may upload a video of his colon puppet to youtube for anyone who missed it. Bob is a really funny guy who has a lot of great, original ideas. The final show was, as expected, absolutely phenomenal. To see Nina Conti, Dan Horne and Jay Johnson together in one show was absolutely mind blowing. Unfortunately the style of MC didn't quite seem to fit the rest of the show. Perhaps it is just a cultural difference but I found the display of nationalism during a comedy show a little jarring. Nevertheless the show was incredible. Conti, Horn and Johnson are three of the best ventriloquists in the world and seeing their incredible talent all together made me just want to pack up my puppets and go home! If you've not been to the convention before, particularly if you are just starting out, I highly recommend you get along. It really has to be seen to be believed. Oh, I'd also like to add (for any organisers reading this and looking for feedback) that I really appreciated the food trucks that were organised. I am vegetarian so there wasn't much on offer for me from the restaurant and there is no grocery store around so it was good to have the additional option.

Oh I should add that I stayed an extra day after the convention and had a one on one class with Ken Groves. It was amazing. I'd highly recommend booking in some time with Ken if you'd like to take your stuff to the next level.

I'd like to echo that this was one of the best conVENTion's I've attended. My duties kept me hopping so I didn't get to absorb as much as I would have liked. For me, it was about spending time with friends. Even though those moments were brief, it makes me happy to be a part of the family and know I have so many friends around the world.
One thing I do want to share - we had an incredible number of young vents attending this year! The atrium gathering place drove this home when I realized there was a full table of kids hanging out, sharing ideas and helping each other. Cole and Peter, who won Terry Fator's scholarship awards, were an absolute delight. They even helped Ken Groves and I tear down the sound equipment Saturday evening. I also met a young man who caught my shows at Virginia Beach a couple of years ago and was inspired to learn ventriloquism. It was his first conVENTion and I truly wish I had more time to talk with him. The art is at an all time high. With the number of new ventriloquists springing up everyday, and their desires to be the best ventriloquists they can - we have a bright future. My bet is that Mark will make 2013 even better. So put July 17 - 20, 2013 on your calendar, start saving your pennies and don't miss it! |

Oh YES - this was certainly one to remember. So grateful to Mark Wade and all that pitched in. That's a whole lot of hard work and it sure pays off. Did you see the constant look of delight on the faces of the new attendees? It's like the best ride at Disneyland only you don't have to get off for four days!!!
Sarah Jones, I have to agree with you about the MC at the closing show but... WHAT A SHOW!!! Like Tom, I'm busy (at the Axtell booth) a lot of the time and am sure I miss some of the action but I LOVE interacting with all of the vents that come by. The kids are the BEST! I wonder how many adults came just to bring their vent obsessed kids and found themselves hooked on all of the remarkable creativity and comradery they found. Even the hallways and elevators were exciting. New venue (Airport Marriott) was terrific!! |

I too brought my wife after her not attending for 6 years. She also said she will be in attendance next year. This year was a great conVENTion all the way around.
