This past Sunday I went to the local renaissance fair for the first time. I have always wanted to go, but for some unknown reason I never did. Going to the ren. fair, I had 2 things in mind. First was to have fun, see what it’s all about, and enjoy the day with my girlfriend. Second was to do some recon work, check out the performances see if and how my magic could be beneficial to the fair, and last try to figure out a way to work my way onto a stage for next year.
The first thing I want to point out is Renaissance Fairs are AWESOME. I am a bit of a nerd, I like fantasy, psy-fi and all that other nerdy stuff. It was awesome to see so many people (both workers and patrons) dressed up in character, and just having fun for the day. The shows I saw were great, Acrobatics, Ventriloquist, sword fights, Comedians, Magicians, jugglers. And everything else. I did notice that the fair had a raunchy sense of humor, much like mine. I feel my magic would be a great addition to the fair. Wear a good costume, add in a few “My Lords and My Ladies”. However I know it’s not that easy. A friend of mine (more like a friend of a friend), has a juggling act at the fair, he has been there for a few years, I gave him a call before I went and asked about how to get into the fair. He said there are magicians lined up out the door to be able to get into fair. My best bet was to have a great act, costume, and a little bit of luck. I am not planning on trying for anything this year, it’s too late, however, this is something I want to work on for next year. The dressing up, the acting classes, the unique presentations, I think all of this would be an incredible experience, and worth a little hard work, and a serious try. Does anyone here have any other tips, tricks, and advice on how to get into a ren fair? Has anyone here ever worked a ren fair? If so what was it like? Do you still do it? If not why did you stop?

Andy, I have been eyeing our Ren-Fair as well. They have stage and walk around performers both. They will accept performers that do the period style and just general strolling/busking style from what I read. I am very interested to hear what others have to say regarding this. How would you dress? Merlin style with conical hat? You could use the hat for a cone trick, robes, imagine toppiting into a robe, you could do a cantaloupe for Pete's sake! Anyway, I think some acting classes for this may be in order! I need a few extra hours next semester in school for full time, maybe I can find an acting class on campus that I can take as an elective...hmmm.

This weekend was a steampunk weekend, I really liked the steampunk look. However I am not sure how I would dress, I plan on making my own costume, need to research some different looks, and get the color scheme correct, (your colors show your class) Also, the ren fair in my area has its own acting class they require all new acts and employees to attend. It’s free if they hire you. I know they have open auditions during our winter months, but I want to be top notch and prepared by then.

I would probably not be caught dead within a hundred furlongs of a Ren Fair.
Two names on the Café instantly spring to mind when I went through this thread. Master Payne and Bill Palmer. These two have been wildly successful performers in exactly the venue under discussion. I've even seen Master Payne in steampunk apparel. I suspect if you messaged either one you'd find a wealth of material, answers and ribald tales. |

That website sucks, that magician looks like a fool, I wonder who he could be. haha JK, I love the look Devious! Your hat a goggles are bad@ss. I saw some crazy awesome looking steampunk costumes at the ren faire. Not sure if its the "look" I want to go for yet. Im still brain storming ideas, and trying to put an act together. If you have any ideas or suggestions, feel free to post or PM them.
