By Dunninger (sp?). I see this thing sold all the time but haven't heard much about it. Is it any good?

The book isn't by Dunninger - it's about Dunninger, and specifically discusses possible methods he may have used to achieve his "brain buster" effects which used to close his radio shows.
It should not be looked at as a book on workable methods, but it is a great insight into a man who in his day was one of the most famous names in the US. It's written by Joseph Atmore who I believe is working on a comprehensive biography of Dunninger. |

Jonathan - you should get this book if you have not done so already - it is very well written, informative, and interesting!

Through my association with Dunninger's widow, I own one of the note books which Dunninger recorded many of his weekly radio brainbusters in. The date, the name he gave them...(most of which are just initals) and the explanation of each. Due to the fact that he had so many, was the reason for the notebook, so Mrs."D" said.

Jonathan,
The book is great, however if you are looking for effects on mentalism it is not for you. I liked the book more for the biographical side of Dunninger, very interesting person as well as David Lustig who was his main assistant. Coincidently Joseph Atmore ( the author ) lives around the corner from my house in California and I stopped by and had him autograph my copy very nice person and very informative when it comes to Dunninger. The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

But one could argue that you can learn how to effectivly present effects. And the power of a performers persona.

Thank Rennie for the kind words and the others for the interest in Brain Busters.
As Rennie stated, it is not so much a collection of Dunninger's methods, as it is a historical record. The primary purpose to was describe the effects that Dunninger peformed week after week on his radio and television series and then speculate as to the method. I would hope by studying the material, one could learn how in some cases, very simplistic methods, could be turned into "Brain Busters". In other cases, no methodologies are known, so some are created by some of today's great minds in mentalism. Also, the oft forgotten David Lustig plays a big part in the book as I hoped to describe his role well. (It also irks me greatly when I hear constantly from unknowledgeable folks that Dunninger accomplished "all" of his effects via p-- s---. H&R the publisher still has some copies and I do as well, though the book is out of print.

Brain busters is really good. Also, I advise "Dunninger" by Charles A. Buckner. Really good stuff, but like brain busters, it's not a book of tricks. It's about Dunninger's publicity. Nevertheless, the author explains some tools wich Dunninger used. this book is "a must have" ! Otherwise, you can read the booklet's series of Al Mann about Dunninger.

I picked up Dunninger's Brain Busters by Joe Atmore last year very inexpensively. I think it's now OOP. Finally got around to reading this slim volume. It's now one of my favorite mentalism books ever!
It shows you how a pro who must turn out a lot of new material every week works. Far from being impractical as some have said, the book has lots of effects and practical methods that are transferable. And it may help to restore the proper perspective that some of us need with regard to the relative balance between effect and method.

Hi Landmark:
I am glad you are enjoying the book. Yes, it has been OOP for over a decade. And of course, it is my reference book for my "Joseph Atmore is Dunninger" show! There are actually many pros who use the routines in that book - some straight from the book and others have modified them. If you like that book, you may also enjoy my latest, Dunninger Knows, which came out about a year ago. Same premise as Brain Busters, but in this case it covers almost every single routine Dunninger performed on television - about 100 of them. The material is based directly on the reviews, scripts and films of the shows, as well as interviews with tv crew. And, methods provided by some of the top names in the field. During this year's Mindvention, I screened a 1956 TV Amazing Dunninger TV episode - almost 60 years since it was first broadcast live. And the series never went into reruns back then! If Bob is reading this - March 9, 1975 - didn't run into you again on Tuesday

Thanks, Joe. (By late Tuesday it felt like a truck was the only thing that ran into me!)

For some of us, it didn't end actually until last night. Danny, Ron Guttman, Kenton and I performed at Jeff's McBride's Wonderground and there were quite a few Mindvention attendees in the audience. You would have liked my opener I think - Parrish's Mental Opener. If it ain't at least 50 years old....
