This is one of my favourite effects,
I almost always get enormous reactions performing it. the effect: you ask someone to think of a name, and give your wallet to another spectator, you are able to predict some details about the person and in the end the name of the person is written on your business card inside the wallet! I would like to discuss a small problem I am having about presenting it. first off all I must point out that I am more of a magician than mentalist, and I don´t claim any supernatural powers, however I do say I am mixing magic with psychological elements. so in my case the second part(the most impressive part!) doesn´t make a lot of sense!! to be able to say details about the person is very plausible for my character (as I really use psychology to say details about the person). But how could I have written the name in my wallet, before I even met the person if I am not a psychic! I feel that in a way, the second part (prediction) contradict the first part (psychological reading). I´m afraid it can reveal the method. the spectator might be thinking ¨if he is not a psychic, he cannot know the name, therefore he must have been doing this and that (the real method!) Despite the contradiction, I am not seeing myself dropping the effect from my repertoire because of its strong impact, but I was hoping to hear your experience/thoughts about this sort of effects. maybe the topic should be: how you as a magician present mental effects? thank you |

Find a more plausible explanation.
Instead of something random like a name, have them think of something specific say, the name of a city or an animal or such. Then you can claim that you psychologically 'influenced' them to think of the place/animal... |

Why not just claim nothing? Let them decide for them selves on your abilities. By the sounds of what your doing, it's more like mental magic more then anything else. If you go the psychological route, why not have them use the name of a business? Eg. Restaurant, major company etc (you get the idea) Talk about the power of influence that big companies can have on us. Such as their names (what's in a name?) how they advertise and what not. Right down your thoughts, make a story or do some research on sbliminal messaging. I'm not familiar with the effect so I can't really help you as much as some may be able to.

Thanks!
Darren I agree - so far I don´t claim nothing (but it does has a feeling of psychological routine). Saurabh I understand the idea but to predict an important name is much stronger then predict an animal or a city. I want to make it clear that I don´t have a problem with the effect nor the method. i´m afraid that after the emotions are gone, spectator can figure some details of the method (he might say to himself ¨this guy is a magician not a mind reader, so he probably did ¨that¨...). |

The effect is so strong on the spectator that they probably will think the other way around, and say "he says he uses psychology, but I think this guy really is psychic, how else could he have known my daughters name".

This is an easy fix. If you're very set on using the name, but want to stray away from psychic ability, then the answer is to use pseudo hypnosis. Just create a process/induction for them to play along with, while not explaining what or why they are doing it, eg.(pattern interrupt) and then after the entire effect is over, claim to them that they told you the name under hypnosis, and you made them forget they told you that information, or were even hypnotized. They will freak out and be amazed.
It occured to me at once that love could be a great illusion, that makes fools of brilliant thinkers everyday

Ive seen Oz perform this, at a rare lecture I get too, this effect is very strong...yet, I think that if your a magician then they will think that you did a card to wallet type effect (assuming they think anything at all regarding method).
I would HIGHLY reccoment using Mr. Cassidys names/places routine over Oz's routine if your looking for a cleaner effect that demonstrates mind reading versus, "how did he get that name in his wallet". Yet, this truely is over thinking becuse both routines are very strong and I really don't think that an audience is going to even attempt reconstruction. Billy |

Thanks to all you brought up some good points.
yes indeed I might be over thinking this. the effect is super strong and well constructed. instead of deciding on how I want them to accept what had just happened, I should focus on performing it as I do know and leave them wondering about it as they wish! |

I really must echo what myke said. If you deliver your presentation with conviction and heart, You will be suprised with what they end up believing.

Hey,
My post used animal/city as an example. I'm sure the same thing can be applied to names of celebrities or general christian names or like Darren said, brands. |

There's also the logical way, if it doesn't fit you personna and what you do/you are, don't do it!
It's not because it's strong you have to do it! I'm surprise nobody told you that.

Hey Parmenion, yes I am also surprised nobody told me that.
