I am a first of May, having just completed clown school with the New York Goofs at University of North Texas. I am planning on venturing into hospital and humanitarian work, and am taking a clowning trip with Patch Adams in September. I'd like to know if anyone here has done, or is doing this type of clown work who are willing to share their experiences. What skills do you favor in the hospital and clinical settings? thanks!

I would SO do hospital clowning full time if I had the opportunity to do it. The benefit to the kids, their parents, the staff and visitors is incredible. The ideal mix for me would be hospital + chaplain clowning. It opens a door to help others in so many ways!

I just started clowning with the Shriner's. The unit makes several trips over to our closest hospital. I have not had the chance to go yet, but I am excited to do it. Any tips for clowning with the kids?

You already know, I am sure, no balloons. Also, my experience as a Shrine clown at SHFC was often based on what our unit director wanted us to do instead of what WE wanted to do.

How will you be utilized there? All the kids in one spot at one time?

Dick Monday and Tiffany Riley of NY Goofs are involved in a hospital program in TX. They may be able to provide some insight.

I work with a group of people who are regularly forgotten... the elderly. More specifically, people with Dementia. Working as a clown in aged care settings is very different to working with children but, equally rewarding for all involved. If I can offer you any advice, ideas or tips please get in touch Smile

I work with the senior community too as part of my Therapeutic Clowning. You are right, Petered, they ARE regularly forgotten! And it IS equally rewarding. Plus, I don't recall who said it but there is a great phrase that talks about how you can judge a nation by how it takes care of it's elderly. I don't think the USA does a very good job much of the time.

You're 100% right Carl. Many are under the incorrect impression that clowns are infantilizing the elderly.. I've never had one resident or family member feel this way nor do I approach the work in that way. The relationship must always come first and once that is in place mischief can occur! Our French colleagues call it 'belle visite' meaning beautiful visit.

Carl, if you'd like to swap prop ideas, approaches etc I would love to share!
