I have performed book tests, but never using anything that was commercially marketed. I usually create my own gaffs when there is a gaff involved, especially for book tests.
Most of my book tests that I have created props for cost under $2 for the entire effect and that's for a test using 3 books. I have performed "A Classic Swindle" from 13 Steps using books, and also just a simple book test using a peek book that I made out of a used paperback. Simple, direct, inexpensive, & effective. I've had people stumble back to their seats after this, because they were so affected by having their thought read. In thoughts, Allen |

I have created my own books for book tests, but I am into book-binding. It's not trivial to make a book that looks like one you would buy at a bookstore. I actually think many of the commercial book tests are badly crafted. I won't say names but they should look more into type-setting, proper book formatting, and proper materials for construction (including paper selection!). The advantage of coming up with your own book tests is that no one else will be performing that one and you can tweak it to your heart's content. Then again not everyone is as patient
If any one decides to make their own book test, one suggestion: make it a hard cover. Much easier to imitate and much more durable. -Alain Bellon |

Yes, easier to imitate.
What I mean is that it is easier to make a book that looks like a regular hard cover book, than to make one that looks like a paperback. -Alain Bellon |

So, what is mental Yarn?

If I'm not mistaken, Mental Yarn is an inferior knock-off of Ned Rudledge's clever routine "Eight Objects." This effect uses a list of eight objects, and the performer asks two spectators to each concentrate on one of the objects. Without asking any questions, the performer then is able to name the objects being thought of by each spectator.

Correction:
Ned Rutledge's original "Eight Objects" uses a list of eight objects (obviously). Mental Yarn uses a listing of 10 objects.

So how is it inferior? Is this worth getting?

In what way is it inferior? 10 objects does sound like an improvement to me. (If it's a knock-off then it's of course unfortunate)

Yellow Yarn is inferior to Eight Objects in at least two ways:
1. As Ford Kross noted earlier, Yellow Yarn is an unabashed rip off of Eight Objects, an effect marketed by Ned Rutledge as part of a three-effect package called "Triple Threat". 2. The effect makes more sense as eight items. I won't say more as it might tip the working of the effect. JZ

Being that Rutledge published his Triple Threat in 1969, I think it is unlikely that Danny Archer's product of the same name would be connected.

I only use commercial effect most by Mr. Osterlind. However I have taken the techniques and applied them in different ways sometimes creating what may look like a different effect but in fact is not. I suppose I could be accused of being unoriginal and while true as to method it would be untrue as to presentation.
I don't know how to be any other way? Back in the day Tannens didn't sell tricks with presentations. They pretty much just sold the secret and the props. I think was so that the performers parting with their method wouldn't have to compete with themselves so to speak. Many find this to be the problem with today's dependence on video for instruction and why books are stressed by the us old timers. That doesn't mean there's no room for video since one might compare it to personal instruction. So while I might be recognized as a student of those I study, I wouldn't be considered a clone. In conclusion I try to change everything I do even slightly if possible but I must be true to the core of an effect, I just don't have time to create from scratch. Hope that helps. Cheers.
Just cause they say it, doesn't make it true.

That's right, in most cases commercial effects are not so stunners. If I use commercial effect I usually form to the Hungarian conditions.
I love books, these are usefulness the most effect from shop... |
