One of my clients sent me this email today. Her son is 12 now--what advice would you give her?
Cesar, Six years ago, you performed for my younger son's birthday. He's loved magic ever since. But he just took a magic class and now he is completely hooked on performing. Are there any good places in northern NJ that teach magic to kids? I'm not finding much on the Internet. Thanks, -- Virginia |

Thanks for the suggestions/questions--here is a follow up email from the mother:
It was a basic table tricks class put on by Hobby Quest.. The kids were give the equipment for the trick (cups, cards, etc.) and then taught to perform it and one or two other variations. They performed for each other in class and then in a show for parents at the end. He was the only kid in the class who was not visibly nervous when it was his turn to perform. He put on a show a few nights later for his aunts, uncles and cousins, and was thrilled that he could stump two of his uncles, who both know some card tricks. He has also been watching a show about bigger tricks, the Vegas-style magic acts. It is called "Breaking the Magician's Code" . He has been searching for more magicians to watch on YouTube, but I had to explain to him that Harry Houdini lived before YouTube was invented. He had a rough go of it in elementary school. He is severely dyslexic, which caused several kids in his class to believe that he is stupid. He was rather badly bullied as a result. So I have been trying to look for ways for him to get a fresh start in middle school and it seems that magic might be one of those ways. He has shown some of his tricks to kids who were with him in elementary school and they were amazed. It has given him a whole different outlook on himself. The town has a kids talent show in January, and he has already said he would like to perform in it. That means he would need to learn some tricks that would show well from a stage in a high school auditorium. His act could be no more than 4 minutes and easy to set up. I appreciate you taking the time to think about this. |

There's a KIDabra chapter (chapter 10)in northern NJ. I did a lecture for them recently. Brad Ross, John Carlson and many more friendly folks with lots of experience.

A four-minute bit? Have him pick something from Mark Wilson's or Joshua Jay's books; then show him how to both do the magic and how to create a performance.
On a high stage with several hundred people, he needs to know how to work around a microphone, how to enlarge your movements to be seen, how to make eye contact with a large crowd, and how to work with lights glaring in his eyes so bad you can't see the audience. If you can get a glimpse of the auditorium, it would be good to know if he will be above the audience or below them: can the audience see something on a table (like cups and balls), or does it need to be all in the hands? Just some thoughts. Ed |

Advise her to have him join The Magic Café.
Are there any magic shops in that area that have magic classes? |

There is a team of magicians in New Jersey that run a company called Skyhigh Entertainment, that run magic camps in the summer. You might contact them.

I understand your post and her wanting some one to teach him. However if she is looking for a starting point I would let her know about Josh Jay's Book on Magic. That would be perfect for him as a lot of the items needed to perform the effects come right from home. He would gain a lot from this book and it also comes with a DVD.

Mentoring can be very fulfilling. I am mentoring a child that recently moved out-of-state, so we video conference. Also, going over basics helps my act too. I feel the best way to learn magic is from a mentor. I mentored a child a long time ago that now has a Vegas act. It makes me proud, even though I did not get him there, I helped.
