Hearing from many that Pete Terhune "Poobah" has passed away. Poobah was the fire-eater with Ward's show for years and years and a true sideshow legend. I had only met Poobah a couple times, once at the sideshow gathering in 2004 and once at my first ever experience at a real sideshow when I was about 12 years old. Such a huge loss for the sideshow community, I'm sure many others here will have stories better than my own. I believe Pete had turned 80 years old this past December. RIP Poobah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3SWGRBom68 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02T6yvUAlkM&feature=related

What?! Oh man, both of these reports bring deep sympathy for Ward & Chris. I worked with Petey on the bally stage, I'll find the pics and post them. I DO have some stories, most of which are not appropriate for public forum. One fact is that Petey had really bad hearing loss. Although his hearing aide was made in the 70's, he could hear pretty well. One of his signature moves was to make pretend he didn't hear a word you said, then adjust the hearing aide til it squealed, then walked away. He and Jimmy will be sadly missed. These are legends that simply cannot be replaced.

These pics are BAD, they were shot on 110 film, developed, then scanned.

The top photo looks like Petey is ready to attack me with his torch!

Met Poobah just once, years ago at the Hamilton County Fair.
As I entered the top, he was just finishing up the "iron tongue" routine.

Wow, so sad to hear. I traveled with Ward back in '96. Pete was a true legend and loved what he did. Nips, I could share many stories as well- Pete still had that old-style hearing aid and I'm sure it was the same one. He could sleep wherever he fell, and more than once we'd see him napping under a parked truck. And Jimmy! He was the greatest when it came to setting up the tent. I was only with the show long enough to understand about 85% of his "Jimmy language"- as Jimmy would say, "It's a great show it is" (those who knew him will understand!). And of course, we miss Bruce AKA Harold Huge. These were great folks. I'm blessed to have known them.
