Does anybody know what the best portable light for a 10' by 10' stage that costs under $50? If so, may I have a link to a website? Thanks so much.

A fresnel or leko would be good. You can't find them new for that price, but you might find one used on Caraiglist for under $50. The bigger question is where will you hang it? Lighting stands can be expensive, too.

Do you know of any that can go on the floor and aim up?

You can mount them on a piece of wood on the floor, but they won't look that good. Up light can be harsh looking and is only effective when used with lights that are coming from above.

2 light stands with a t-bar with 4 lights on each side would be a good and profesional soulution.
For this set up, you would need: 2 stands 2 dimmer packs 1 controller 8 par can lights 2 DMX cables (mic cords) and 2 extension cords a few color gels for the par cans another option, that may look good, depending on your performances may be to get 2 single light stands, search for photography lighing stands. This route may still need a dimmer pack and cheap controller. Where as one light on each side of the stage may seem kinda "cheap looking" there are comedy clubs and small music venues with less.... |

For $50 I would go to a lowes or Home Depot and get some halogen work lights on stands.
Without a dimmer pack you won't have much control and they will be very bright and harsh white light but they would be an option in that price point. |

There are many small lighting options available now that use LEDs. They are cheaper and lighter, plus they don't generate much heat. Some use colored bulbs too, so you don't need the gel sheets. Some are sound activated so they will automatically flash to the beat of the music. You can get them with a simple footswitch operation too, but the footswitch models I have seen are pretty much limited to on/off, and maybe auto or chase mode.

I use led "bricks" they are tiny abut the size of a brick and you can either set them mannually or run them off your computer.
