Okay, here's a questions for you all. I stumbled upon a lovely old carnival blade box illusion for sale. It was owned by Al Delage. I have been researching the origins of the blade box and in this ad there is something about NOMA the Master Mystery. Does anyone know anything about this trick. I am trying to figure out if this NOMA came before the sideshow blade box illusion and it was adapted by carny showmen or if it is a later development based upon the sideshow illusion. Anyone know anything about it? Here's the ad:

Noma was made by Sherms in both horizontal and vertical versions. I believe most were copper lined. Plans and info are in the Sherms book.It is not like other blade boxes.

Noma was made by Sherms. If my memory serves me correctly there are only two surviving units. Bill King owned one and Ken Klosterman the other one.
It was a striking blade box as all the insert areas were outlined with the copper or brass trim. Both Klosterman's and King's are the vertical models. The one you have pictured does not look like King's or Klosterman's. They had a closed door on the front. I will have to see if I have any photos of it that I can send you. It really does not seem like the type of thing that Al Delage would have done. The finish looks pretty new on this box. I wonder if it is a more recent copy. Richard

The illusion for sale is not a Noma as made by Sherms. The one for sale is a much newer blade box.

The Noma used by Bill Neff was owned by Bill King. I believe it is among the items that will be eventually auctioned by Potter and Potter, who acquired the King collection.

Sorry to disappoint some folks, but the Noma illusion will NOT be in the Potter auction.

Just saw Ken Klosterman's NOMA. It is a thing of beauty.

Richard Hughes...correct me if I have this wrong. (I figure you would have been there!)
I seem to remember SHERMS doing his NOMA (upright cabinet with swords (or possibly canes) not blades, at an Abbott GTG. It would have been in the '70s. It was a very slow presentation!

The only time I saw Sherms perform he was much older and retired from active performing. and, yes, the presentation was painfully slow. I wanted to jump up onto the stage and finish the trick for him! I mentioned this to a much older friend who assured me that Sherms did not work so slowly in his prime

There are swords and blades. Ken's Noma is the one formerly owned by Sid Radner.
John Bundy and I just had a talk Wednesday about how slow it was to do. No matter how fast you work, it takes time to put all that stuff through holes and slots. The fastest and my dynamic sword box I have ever seen was Bob Kramer. Just don't stand in the wings when he take out the swords because he literally pulls them out them them fly into the wings. Great performer. Richard
