I got the muscle pass down pretty good, but I can't muscle pass the coin upwards. So I am wondering, is there a special technique to use or anything, or do you have to squeeze extremely hard?

Do a search for muscle pass here at The Magic Café.
It has been discussed a lot, and you will get a great deal of excellent advice. Then, once you have read it all, if you have a specific question or point, you can ask it. You won't be disapointed, nor will you have to wait for someone to post a response. BroDavid

How many people do the MP with both hands? Viewing most magic vids, magicians seem to use their left hand more. But I do it with my right. I have been working on my left lately and since I know what I'm doing, have progressed rather rapidly with it.
Also, I have come up with (what I think are) some unique applications for the MP. Is there documentation as to all the uses of the MP anywhere?

Interesting, every single magician I have ever met has performed the move with their right hand. I can hardly execute it with my left. But I can shoot it through the ceiling in my right. Haha, well almost.

I'm left handed but do the MP and most of my moves with my right hand.
RE: Also, I have come up with (what I think are) some unique applications for the MP. Is there documentation as to all the uses of the MP anywhere? Shoot O. has many applications on "CulturalXchange" DVD with Apollo R. A lot of great routines are on there. Hope this helps. Joe

Yes, I've seen Shoot's applications. (He does it with his left hand, Apollo with his right) and Harbottle's application on POS 1.
If you guys say most do it with their right hand, I need to get out more!

If you could do it with your foot, more power to you. It doesn't really matter what hand you execute the pass with, just as long as you do it beautifully.

I was lucky, after a couple of tries at it; I got it to go pretty far. I just can't get it to go up very far.
I did a search, and I found some useful tips, just no techniques on how to shoot it up. The only thing I found on shooting it up was getting calluses, and eventually it will come. |

You’re not doing the muscle pass justice if the coin doesn't go straight up. From my eyes I think that it looks way more impossible and magical going straight up.

I can sometimes do the muscle pass in both hands. One thing that I've played with is to do repeated muscle passes while alternating hands. Do it with my right, and then catch it in my left, then bring the left hand down and muscle pass it again.
One other thing you can use ambidextrous muscle passes is for an pseudo-explanation of coins across or a slow motion of coins across or how they switch places. K.C. |

I agree with Kainoa. It wasn't even until John Cornelius' wife suggested that he try doing it vertically that it became what it is today. But years before, it has been a great tool for coins across and other effects.

I agree too Kainoa. I didn't write it the way it was in my mind. I re-worded myself to make it clearer what I was trying to say. I haven't seen Shoot's material I'm sorry to say. Is there a DVD available?

Randall, the muscle pass is not necessarily meant to be seen. It can be used as an invisible transfer from one hand to another.

The first time I saw mention of the M.P was in Buckley's Book. I then saw it done by John C. in a lecture tour during the mid 70's.
I love hidden as well as visual use of the move. Yes, I can do it with both hands. It is part of my copper silver routine. I ask if the spectators want to see the coins go back and forth visually or invisibly. If they say visually I do the move with the coins starting i.e. copper in left and silver in right (hands) Then I do the M.P. with both hands to switch the coins. A great visual "color change" can be done using the M.P. with a C/S coin. I came up with the idea accidentally when playing with some coins. (I am guessing that others may also have come up with the same idea independently.) Later I saw it in print as a hidden move in a coins across with copper and silver coins.(Gertner perhaps???) I also play with it with other objects such as rocks. (As I quip about the first rock musician. This precedes my imitation of Mick Jagger. Keep growing and glowing and enjoy the journey. Harris

The muscle pass is a pass you do with the flab, also known as muscle in your hand, it doesn’t really matter which direction it goes. But it's not really that impressive if you do it down though.

The muscle pass can be used as a vanish. Launch the coin to your breast pocket and you'll have a one-hand complete vanish. Of course you can vanish the coin to topit, breast pocket or jacket pocket for some cleaner 2-handed vanish.

With some button down shirts I can use the M.P. to vanish a coin in between the buttons.
Retrieval is a bit trickier. Harris
