Here's something to get us thinking. There are certain effects in magic that can have someone saying, "What in the world?" yet don't require a person to necessarily be there during an introductory phase in order to understand the effect.
One effect, "The Coin That Falls Up", using the muscle pass, comes to mind. Are there others that come to mind? Is an effect performed in this context ever viable? In other words, if a coin falls up and a spectator just glances over to see it, is it really an attention-getter? The point is that I'd like to coax people to want to see something, rather than asking if they'd like to see something, in an impromptu context. |

Excellent question...There is one thing that I have used time and time again and it has NEVER failed to get attention from other folks at a distance.
Back in my "going out with friends nightclubs days" I used to see the same guys there each and every weekend. They knew I did magic and would expect me to show them something from time to time. And funny, they used to use me as an "attention grabber" for the opposite sex. Well one night I was prepared and I performed the floating bill using an ITR. Well, needless to say, I grabbed the attention of just about everyone who was around. Talk about a 15 minutes of fame. BAM!! Fame lasted the whole night and I met more people than I could shake a wand at. Also, I would imagine any effect using flash string, paper or cotton would be another example of an attention-getter. You see a flash out of the corner of your eye. Even if you miss the effect or what is going on from a distance, if that person who caught the flash then sees the reaction from those who are being performed for, they are going to have an interest in what is going on. I am sure there are others but those are a quick two that come to mind.

Fl!p Stick, if done properly, it looks quite like the wand VANISHES from plain sight. No question.
Ring that travels up an angle on a rubber band from Dan Harlan's video series. Borrowed ring, broken rubber band. This KILLS! Linking Rings, of course. Scarf juggling—just the sheer (pun intended) silliness grabs people's attention. Hope these help! Lee Darrow, C.Ht. http://www.leedarrow.com

This is more of a busking-on-the-street thing for getting people's attention but putting a bag of tricks on the ground and drawing a large chalk circle around it usually gets people to stop and wonder.
If it were me I'd stop, do a blast of fire and say, "Now that I have all of your attention." |

Human Blockhead or sword swallowing is definitely an attention-getter. I think I would prefer the HB being that a nail can fit in your pocket!

Paperclip Through Arm is a great way to get people's attention. People freak out and others will want to see what's going on after they scream.
Self Levitations are also sure-fire attention grabbers. They just look uncanny and people can't help but become interested in what you will do next. |

I've found card manipulations to be great way to get people's attention and one of my best ways to get people interested in my walk-around magic. Linking rings are always good, levitations, fire eating, a good animal balloon through the nose and out the mouth always works too. But some magicians think that, "It’s not magic". (Say it fast for the few who just don't get it.)

Surely Healed and Sealed is being forgotten. This lasts long enough and is visual enough to hook in anybody who sees a second or two of it, plus it uses a quick set-up (e.g. a visit to the toilet.)

Or just do a couple of card throwing revelations. People love those.

I know it's cheesy but a few seconds of D'lites will get peoples attention and is a good way to lead into other tricks, which you can grab from your pocket when you ditch the D'lite.

I use my jumbo sponge rabbits. The individuals see me make it disappear when I had it or toss it to them. It quickly gets their attention.

“Sponge rabbits” was the first trick I ever got a WOW! reaction with. It really spurred me on. My wife keeps asking for it (and sometimes she gets magic-ed out so that is really something!)

Now, let's add one more condition to the question. What about effects that can be done impromptu or with a simple prop that takes up almost no room in the pocket?
