Wow ! Just received THE MARK from elmwoodmagic.com I know this is not
a new item, but it is for me ! It works beautifully ! VERY well machined coin/gimmick. The routine flows perfectly and natural. I love working with well made props...and this is WELL made ! |

I found mine packed away for many, many years. From Al Cohen back then. No glitzy dvd's.
written instructions. a brilliant trick. I applaud Paul and Elmwood for obtaining the rights to this great effect. |

Yup, I remember Al doing it for me. He handed me his keys and told me to unlock a trunk on the other side of the store. It finally dawned on me that the key fob was the signed half. I purchased it immediately. I recently uncovered it in a hidden stash in my home.
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Paul at Elmwood did a wonderful job re-introducing this effect to the magic community.
You will carry this with you always! |

If I were speaking to you in Yiddish I would say this all is a "mitzvah" a good deed.... The creator was a most devoted and very well skilled card man named John Murray.. he owned the Up the stairs magic shop here in Greenville, South Carolina. Our Saturday afternoons were always "up the stairs". This was in the 80's. and in this area he was quite well known to the uninformed. We all adored him for the magic he inspired in all of us here at the time. The mitzvah for us is that for you guys buying the trick and remarking on his creativity and this particular effectiveness is a testimony for a once well regared man who passed away a few years ago without much notice. I wish you all the best success with this trick and to perform it as often and with as much success as you can.

I, like Marty, knew John Murray the inventor of The Mark. It was my pleasure to be associated with him from 1973 until his death. I often worked in his shop as a demonstrator and was around when his many original tricks were "invented." The Mark came about when John discovered a defective Scotch & Soda prop and the "playing" with the parts and pieces became The Mark. Near the time he closed hiss Greenville, SC shop, John gave the future production rights to the justly famous magic dealer and demonstrator Al Cohen. I am almost certain that the trick was made in the half dollar and the quarter versions.
In this age of blatant rip-offs it is very gratifying to see an original creator getting the proper credit for a reissued trick! John would be so proud to know his creative invention continues to be used to create baffling and entertaining magic. (By the way - John wrote one book - Inside John Murray. It exists as a very limited hardback version and comb bound paperback. John was a respected card man and there are some choice items in the book. It is not limited to cards, however. There are some clever coin items, a routine for the pea and shells and other gems.) |

I'm also a big fan of The Mark, and bought it years ago from Al Cohen in his shop. I have both the quarter and half dollar sizes, but from the discussion above, it seems the quarter size isn't being made now.
This is a perfect trick. Cheers, Jerry |

I have both also from Al Cohen, quarter and half dollar sizes. Great magic effect.
The problem with making a quarter version - now - is because of the all the different quarters being made for each state on the reverse side of all quarters. |

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!
I was really pleased to get the rights to this item. As I say on our site, I’ve been using the routine for years and it always gets dynamite reaction. For those curious about a quarter version, if you watch the demo and see my presentation the idea is that they have a chance at getting my “lucky” coin. To me, a quarter just doesn’t have the “special” vibe I’m looking for. I think a half dollar really is the only way to go. Bringing this item back to market has been a real labor of love for me, so it’s great to hear that so many are happy to see it back! Yes, the - in the hands - climax is a killer to not pass up. Why anyone would have this in a draw is beyond me. It should be in your pocket every day.
What is cool with the half dollar version, you would be surprised how many of todays people, even in their 30's have not seen a half dollar. That draws more interest, as they are learning something new as well. Don't believe me, just go the grocery and give the young cashier a half dollar, silver dollar, or one of those gold dollars the size of a quarter. They are stund and just stand there and look puzzled. Then they call the manager over. We all had a good laugh. |

Not only is this a great effect, but it's a heck of a deal considering the quality of what you receive. The method is actually more complicated and advanced then I'd at first supposed. It requires expert craftsmanship to make it convincing and examinable, but that's exactly what I received at what I consider to be a bargain price. Paul Richards' instructional DVD is concise yet thorough, and is packed with great tips, including a bonus mentalism effect. I can't see using this in walk-around, because the reset requires privacy, but for a one-off effect it's hard to beat. The only thing I'm wondering about is the durability of the keychain fob, but time will tell. So far, so good.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Got this today. The effect is great, very magical to a layman. The method is exactly as I thought, though this is not said to diminish it. The coins are well made and should last a good long time but I'm not sure about the keychain. The part that holds the coin is plastic and feels like it might break and the rest feels very cheap. I like the effect, will use it and an glad I bought it but the keychain is a letdown in my opinion.
