Here are some videos of me doing my finale. My wife took these while I was scouting a new pitch. They are pretty much a bunch a videos of me performing the Gazzo/Vernon/Burton Cups and balls. My only contribution to this is that I happen to be able to do the vanishes and loads with both hands and have been working on eliminating the hand washing moves prior to a vanish by simply not passing it back and forth. Sometimes my brain fails though and I just do it how I originally learned it. It is hard to unlearn years of practice...
My wonderful Videographer and personal photographer (my wife) took these for me. She was the only person I could get to come and do it for me. Go figure. Mostly I think my performance was OK, not my best work or my worst! http://youtu.be/6p72T7D0jg0 http://youtu.be/D7UFjvXJCqA http://youtu.be/mIfOceVN9hs http://youtu.be/x4DoHPtXOAA Your opinions are appreciated, I plan to use this routine until I finish the work I am doing on my own routine. I am also planning to eventually start working out of a pouch instead of the servante. |

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a busker or a pro.
The good: I loved your audience interaction/commentary/engagement. The less good: Does your table height make it so you have to bend over when loading? Especially on the first video, it seemed obvious -- the same body motions are used when "putting a ball away" and when you load. And a question: Do you have to locate so the traffic is behind you? It was very distracting to the performance. I hope this was more helpful than hurtful. I would very much like to hear what the pros have to say. |

Stperformer - That is a friend of mine who has a penchant for drinking at parties and then trying to take off all of his clothes. It's my most successful youtube video to date!
writeall - Thanks, I don't take criticism poorly. If you have read my other thread "Diary of a Beginning Street Magician - ..." You will know that I am pretty critical of each aspect of my show. First the Traffic: When performing on the Sidewalk you have to stay on public property. The opposite of me was a strip of shops. If I was on that side, while they were open, I could get in trouble. Second the Loads: I can only say that I am loading from a servant who's bottom is at about my knees. It has to be large enough to hold a cantaloupe, and the lemons and lime, plus I put the rest of my props for the show in it. I think it was a combination of two things in that case, I was reaching forward to reveal that a ball had returned and putting away/securing load and the two actions require the body motion you saw. To me, it is always obvious when magician loads a cup. Think about it, if he goes to his pocket, pouch, servante, case, and then picks up a cup and passes to the hand that just came from the pocket, we as magi instinctively know what has transpired even if he didn't flash the loads. Lay people on the other hand are almost universally amazed. That being said, I would like some other opinions before I start to attempt correcting it. I also plan to start working out of a Gazzo style pouch soon, hell I may even order one from him since I am basically doing his cups and balls routine....! |

First- Thank you for sharing not only this post but your Diary post also. It has been very inspiring!! I have never done any busking, yet.
Constructive criticism- Eliminate "alright" from your vocabulary. Getting rid of "Um", "OK" and "Alright" is something that I have found to help me have much cleaner patter. Jacob |

I am looking forward to watching your video clips. Seeing that I am at work right now, I do not have access to youtube. I will let you know what I think after I watch.

That's none of your business Ambrose! Just kidding. Yes that is the corner of Virginia and N. Highland.
Thanks for the vocabulary critique. I will attempt to be more aware of it. |

G'day Shaun
I watched the Videos - they will give you some good ideas about where you are going with this part of your act. In the first part I noticed a young boy come up and pick up your cups towards the end of your routine - it was a safe time (nothing to hide)and you worked through without any dramas - I also noticed in some photos on fb and in your later video that you have rope down and that the audience if further back. If this something that you changed and is this issue with audience members walking up and touching props an issue???? I am preparing to take some time and read through your full post on the begining busker in one sitting later tonight. Right now I have finished cooking dinner in our rented appartment in Blois France. My wife, Chris and I are traveling through UK and Europe for 7 weeks - we came over from Oz to FISM and now doing the tourist thing with a Eurail pass. Blois is the home of the museum for Jean Robert Houdin ad we spent most of the day there - it is very well set out and gives a good overview of some aspects of magic history. I have been working on my traveling busking show - no table - and minmal props - and have concluded that my origional ideas were for too much gear and I am now pretty well convinced about how I should set it up to work in different languages and to be able to travel light. I have done shows in Paris, London (South Bank), Kesick and Munich. I plan to write a post about my trip after I get home. Thanks for sharing your journey - you appear to be learing a lot and impoving as you go. I do recall years ago when studing things that included public speaking that the class group would note all the un-needed repiticious words - and at the end you got a list from everyone and would be amazed at how many times you had said "um" etc and then you got to decide if it improved your presentaion or if you should work on eliminating those words. I guess that all you have to do is listen to that part of your presentation and decide for yourself. BTW when performing in Muich to multiple language groups I found it helpful to say an exagerated "WOW" at the climax of some of my routines. It seemed to help with audience rsponse. It's fantastic that you have the courage to share with us
your routine. Especially, a work in progress. I see you as a pioneer in finding a pitch and searching to be somewhat different with the CB routine. I would say that the routine in general is only obvious in the fact that you are still working it out. So tighten up the script, know where your props are, react to unexpected events with comedy, and energy... Keep working it and it would be cool if you show us the progress...

In the first two videos, there's a woman (a different one in each video) standing between the camera and your table. Can't see anything.

The first two videos were more for the crowds reaction than anything else.
Courage posting: I posted the videos because I don't have a mentor. There is no one here in Atlanta for me to learn this art from. No Great Street legends like Gazzo, Kozmo, Sonny Holiday, Jimmy Talksalot etc. I need to share my work with my peers for criticism. Otherwise it is hard for me to improve. I was actually more worried that my magic was poor, I am aware of some problems with the smoothness of the routine and am working on it, I do appreciate your opinions though and criticisms as that was the point of posting in the first place. Some of the things I am working on with the Cups and Balls are from Tommy Wonder's ideas and they are just not practical with balls the size of the ones that came with my Phoenix cups. I have ordered some larger balls and since I don't do any types of stacking moves in my routine or in the one I am working on, it shouldn't matter. Not sure what else to say right now, I will post some more videos in a few weeks, we can compare and see how things have changed then. I am also taking an acting class this Fall and plan to try to work on my show in that class. Oh, and another thing, the rope not being down was a choice for this pitch. Looking at the size of the area for a crowd and also the type of crowd, I wanted to see what happened without it. I thought in this case to just use the table as a barrier. Another thing that happens to me is when there are a lot of children in the crowd, I tend to tone down the patter and that hurts me sometimes. The possibilities of silly Ball jokes with the cups and balls are just endless and I want to use them but I don't want to offend anyone with kids. That is something I tend to struggle with. |

In that environment it was fine. I don't believe that the rope would have stopped that kid from grabbing a cup.

The magic is an excuse to build relationships with the spectators. The magic comes in at a distant second in our list of priorities. Whatever your character is, that character's main job is to build a relationship with the audience.
You could be sweeping the sidewalk, it shouldn't matter. The fact that you happen to be doing a bit of magic at the time is secondary to the relationship building. Ask yourself how many names you learned at the end of each show. How many hands did you shake. How many winks did you give. How many genuine smiles did you exchange. How many times did you pause and just chuckle and make eye contact with someone in the crowd. Danny Hustle gave the best advice ever, and I repeat it often: It's not about getting the crowd to like you. It's about getting the crowd to understand that you Ike them. |

If you need some help with your street show give me a call. I have learned from one of the best there is ... Kozmo. You are stepping in the right direction getting to "local" places like the Highlands. Better crowd. I do my street show EVERY night Wednesday thru Sunday at a "local" place and have earned a great rep with the regulars. Gibe me a call Merritt Ambrose

It looks to me like you are trying to do a circle show on a doorway pitch ... and it is not working. What are you doing as a build before the cup trick?? Me thinks you need to work on your build a lot more.
Just my 2 cents. -JoeJoe

From what I could see you did a good job. Like someone mentioned before there was a spectator in the way in two of the videos.
I know your concern about the "ball" jokes, here is an idea, have back up jokes that are ready to go. I like jokes that are funny not because they are funny, I but because they are not funny. ( I hope that makes sense) Really bad jokes, said at the right time, in the right way can actually be funny. Its called anti-humor. Shows like the office, and Seinfeld are known for this style of humor. What’s invisible and smells like carrots?...... Rabbit Farts!! Why was the little boy so said?..... Because there was a frog stapled to his face I am not saying either of those jokes are good for your style, or that you should use them, but find some non-blue jokes to use as a backup. Don’t get me wrong, Adult theme jokes are my specialty, but I find kids are not fun to corrupt; I prefer to wait until they are a little older...
