Yes. I think I may have an alergy to some perfumes. I walked into Macys and got sprayed by a worker and couldn't breath well afterward and my eyes watered.

Is this part of the anti perfume movement? Years ago they banned perfume from some companies.

Yes to all.
In 1988 a woman wearing strong lousy perfume in a movie theater, caused me to lean the other way toward the girl I was with. The girl misinterpreted the reason for the lean. We were married in 1990. Still married today. True story.

Have you ever smelled a perfume, cologne, body spray, deodorant, or other personal care scented product that:
All answered for me only. - gave you a headache? Yes, very often. - made you feel ill? Yes, in that it generally triggers migraines. - made it difficult to breathe? Yes, often. - made you feel dizzy or lightheaded? No. - you thought was bad or even repulsive and you would never wear it? Yes, almost always. - made you want to overpower it with another scented product? Only with a scent-killing product. - you complained about how much you disliked it to someone later? Yes, sometimes. - made you move away from the source of the scent and or the person wearing it? Yes, almost always, because of the headaches and breathing difficulties. |

Hi, QUESTION Have you ever smelled a perfume, cologne, body spray, deodorant, or other personal care scented product that: - gave you a headache? Yes for me and Tom - made you feel ill? Yes for me and Tom - made it difficult to breathe? Yes for me and Yes for Tom - made you feel dizzy or lightheaded? No for me , YES for Tom - you thought was bad or even repulsive and you would never wear it? Yes for me and YES for Tom - made you want to overpower it with another scented product? No for me and No for Tom - you complained about how much you disliked it to someone later? Yes for me and YES for Tom. - made you move away from the source of the scent and or the person wearing it? Yes for me and YES for Tom. Tom is more sensitive than I am but I find the smells and competing smells hard to take as well. I have gone so far as to return products and complain to companies about scented products, Tom has not. I don't understand why companies think we would want to smell like Bath Soap, Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair product, Deodorant, Facial Cream, Laundry Detergent, Dryer sheets.etc... all at the same time. I don't think the cumulative effect could smell good or be healthy. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks for all that have participated so far. Please feel free to contribute more if you wish. (Kimchi sounds interesting Al. )
I personally suffer from what may best be called Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. As a result I have become an advocate for people going scent free. I gave a link to another thread in the original post of this thread so people could see I do have a bias prior to participating in this survey, should they so choose. There were various points to the survey. First, I believe that most of us would answer YES to either A or B. My experience has been that even most of those who wear a scented product as part of their daily regime have come across a perfume, cologne or other scented product that they didn't like and would not enjoy having to be exposed to it for any length of time. This if very germane to us as performers. When we are hired to work in close proximity to our audience, such as table hopping in restaurants or walk around at receptions of some sort, we are there to enhance the experience of those that we entertain. If we have applied a scented product that offends or physically harms any of the guests, then we are not enhancing their experience in a very positive way. (Of course, the same would apply if we did not bathe and brush our teeth then our body odor or bad breath would be offensive as a result.) As well, the feedback we get from our "smell" is often extremely biased. We are, most of us, conditioned to pay compliments, sincere or otherwise, rather than criticize. Hence, you are far more likely to hear, "You smell nice," over the course of the evening as opposed to, "Your cologne is giving me a headache, get the h*ll away from me." The impression that the scent wearer gets then is that they were positively received by all, if not most, of those they encountered. I do not believe many (if any) person applies a scented product because they wish to smell offensive or to do harm to those they encounter. Most are unaware that they may very well be doing so, even though it is likely that they have experienced a scent they themselves found unattractive or painful at some time or another. The brief and informal poll done here shows that while someone was wearing a scent because they found it attractive, someone else was repulsed or harmed by it. (Although Cliff did find a silver lining to his cloud. Congratulations Cliff and hopefully many more years of bliss to come.) As professionals, should we not take care to avoid harming or causing discomfort to members of our audience? Good hygiene does not have to include adding a scent. Anyway, thanks again for all that participated. Further comments are always welcome and great for discussion. |

I would have to say "no" to (A) and "unknown" to (B). I certainly agree that anyone who works in close proximity to clients needs to err on the side of scentless...

In California, as I said, some of the companies banned perfumes etc. I don't know what chemical is in some but I sure know when near it.

You're right Santa, and it's not just in California where companies (and schools) have put in place scent free policies.
Bill and Mary (& Tom), we seem to have the same reactions when exposed to scented products. It can make it difficult to go to see a movie at a theatre, eat at a restaurant, sit on a bus, train or plane when you are worried about how someone near you might be wearing a a scented product. |

I once saw a sign that banned patrons with no shirt, no shoes, and/or wearing Charlie perfume.
I was on the elevator once when a lady got on wearing some type of perfume that made me sneeze from the time she got on until she got off. Some perfume is oky, but the wearer just uses waaaayyyy too much!
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

My first day of memory & cognition this quarter this frat kid sat next to me bathed in some kind of perfumey something. I started coughing uncontrollably and got up and moved.
I also get migraines and asthma attacks around strong odors like perfume and varnishes.

One other thing is that if the perfume counter is right next to the door in a store I have to hold my breath while I walk by it. I can't stand it. Keeps me from patronizing a couple of stores like our Macy's.
