Bill Abbotts five card opener is geared to train the audience to applaud or react after every trick. I don't know how well it works for young kids. His approach is not my style but many people swear by it so you may want to look into it. However, unless coached or prompted somehow (by yourself or other adults) you're not going to have much success getting preteens to clap. Let's face it, unless you're good you won't get adults to clap either.

I don't know if it will work for kids, but for adults I always have the audience applaud any helper I pick from the audince ("Let's have a big round of applause for ...") both at the beginning and at the conclusion of his stint. It makes the helper feel good and also trains the audience in applause.
