A long time ago, I met J.B. Bobo at the first magic convention I ever attended. He told me something that stayed with me, and I think it still holds true. If you want to learn sleight of hand, start with coins. Anything you can do with a coin, you can also do with any other small object.
Now, obviously, there are some limitations. A coin roll doesn't work well with a sponge ball... but a retention of vision vanish does. So think about that.

Peter Polo, if you go over and read the Penguin boards, this seems to be the feeling of many of the budding magicians over there. I do like Penguins prices, but do feel that there is a lot more flash than substance over there as far as Instant Downloads, etc. They have their target market, which is beginners. I've found that while many start there, after a few years, the find their way to the classic starter books.
As far as the topic at hand, I support previous suggestions of Bobo, Royal Road, and Now you see it... Kevin

Greetings
I kind of get the idear that you don't like oz's dvd is that correct? and I was just wondering if you have seen it. Now, I haven't seen it but if it can teach some people a couple of basic techniques isn't that good? ofcourse there are the wilsons, dai Vernon, daryl, Ammar. those men are really important to magic (I am sorry for everybody I missed, I just wanted to give the feeling erdnase etc.. I could go on forever) and they are extremely good but I can also understand that for a teenager Oz may be preferable because of his presentations. It's just a little more up to date. I am not going to say either one is better. they all have strong points and if oz's presentation is too some people more apealing leave it at that. Oh well just my 0.02 euro greetings all! |

Get Crash Course-1 from ellusionist.com
It offers the basic sleights and the "taken for granted" sleights that can be used to make powerful magic. |

Someone mentioned Troy Hooser. I saw a lecture of his and he had some excellent routines. I especially liked the chinese coins and ribbon. His book has some other coin work too.
