Now if all that hat-stuff led to a Godchild, hey who knows, maybe I could finally become a Godfather II...

Sleightly Small, Stating that someones style of performance doesn't suit you is fine...but stating his style is a goofy orangatang style...now who's being insulting? Avast majority of this kid's posts are negative...constantly putting down others...that's boring! And yes...until he has some actuall experience in the real world performing...he should shut up...he may learn something! Mike I had seen you perform at FFFF last year and until now I respected you, I am not as inexperienced as you think, although I may be young I have a few DVDs coming out next month presented by Paul Harris, and I'm sure if you found my presentation on these DVDs irritating and you spoke up on the Café, I would not verbally bash you with the same disrespect you showed me. I guess we're not allowed to have an opinion any more, It's too bad that we never properly met even though we live so close together, I'm sure you would of liked me and I would of liked you, but your recent comments have put a sour taste in my mouth. I can see why some of the biggest magicians that I have looked up to in the past and present seem to have a problem with you. Well I will probably see you at FFFF next week, maybe we can forgive and forget. JR Posted: Apr 26, 2006 9:30pm ---------------------------------------------- P.S I like Mickey Silver

If anyone knows of any coming up PM and let me know.

I really like Mikey Silver, but I'll agree with Joe. I also saw the demo and I found it irritating. It was the same sleight done over and over and over.
And over. However I can't criticize his presentation because I'm sure he does a lot more than vanish coins for a lay audience. I'm sure he knows better. He could simply have chosen not to do any presentation of any kind in the demo because he wanted everyone to focus on the sleight which he did over and over. And over. So obviously whatever praise he is getting comes from admiration of technique, because of how good that sleight looks in his hands. However in my opinion I don't think a false transfer needs to look that good, because the illusion of the coin in the hand is created in the audience's minds. The same effect can be accomplished with any other transfer, when done corectly. In fact I think that there is too much over-proving in the way he does it, which also looks unnatural (only one finger moves in the hand that retains the coin, and it is kept in play when it shouldn't ) I will say I like the illusion of retention in MS's sleight, but if I really wanted to prove to my audience that I have a coin in my hand, I would really put it there, and steal it later, ala Garrett thomas's imagination coins. So what this thread proves is that a lot of magicians focus a lot on technique. However we must remember that the whole point to a secret method is that no one should know it's happening. A lay person would never say in astonishment " I know you kept it in that hand, but wow you really make it look like it goes in the other one". A lot more than technique is needed to create the illusion in their mind, and I would rather focus more on the things the audience does notice.Again I do like the way the sleight looks. I'm not saying we should focus less on technique, I'm saying we should focus more on presentation. As for Mike Gallo's rude comment, all I will say is that there is no need to put down other performers or tell them the shut up . I don't believe Joe was not being insulting he was just stating his opinion. If you watch Mikey's movements in the demo you can see the similarities to an orangutan's. Not an insult. In this forum, It really seems old school magicians have an ego problem. And by the way, the person you are referring to did not steal anything from you . His effect is a lot different, and in my opinion, it's a lot better. I saw you talking about him last year at FFFF. Not nice. He has respect for you. Like I still do. Please move on, focus on improving your magic, and stop whining over and over and over. And over. Over and out. The One.
I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end...

OK this is enough. Are you so stupid that you can't understand that likening someone you don't know well enough to call a friend, to an oranatange is RUDE? I mean come on. If you and Mickey were at a coffee shop and said it to him and both of you laughed, that would be different.
As to "the One" while I agree that presentation is significantly important and can sometimes out weight technique, it cannot save crap! So when a technique that is developed, that surpasses all that has come before it, you better take notice. IMHO It takes a combination of technique AND presentation to be great. Very few other peformers' ROV have the same conviction in the eyes of the viewer, be they laypersons or magicians, as Mickey's. Admittedly, there is not a lot of presentation on Mickey's DEMO tape, just DEMOS! Seems appropriate to me. If you want to judge Mickey, see him perform live and then you will see his creativity, presentation and appeal to audiences as well as the jaw dropping responses of magicains all around him. Fact that his move looks good without all the presentation, speaks volumes as well. I totally agree that his performance style, as shown on the video, is not for everyone to emulate or even enjoy, but to call the man a monkey is rude. Joe, I totally support your right to your opinion, but you could have expressed it with more respect. Mike called you on it, that hurt your feelings, so you know what it feels like. Mike chose the words he did to cause an effect to bring attention to your words. He was sucessful. My suggestion is own up to what you did, take responsibility and move on. It was a hard lesson, but I hope you can learn from it. And Joe, I don't know you from Adam, so none of my comments should reflect on what type of magician you are. Only seeing your perform can tell us that and only how you respond here will tell us what type of person you are. Kirk |

Hey guy's you wouldn't be talking like this if saw Mickey Silver a week and a half ago perform his amazing Coin Magic at a well known Hospital . (for the 3rd time) This was a floor for termanially ill children. Most of the childrens parent's were there ...with their eyes full of tears....because Mickey put such big smiles on their children's faces. As far as Mickey moving around like orangatang ! Ha that was nothing" he was moving around like at least a dozen different animals... Yes, that's his style and people love it, but most of all they love him because he truely loves them..... As Mickey as alway's told me, this is what magic is all about. This is also what one of his DVD's will be completely about - MOVEMENT OF THE BODY WHILE PERDFORMING COIN MAGIC. WHY WE NEED IT.
Mickey, sorry about adding my two cents, couldn't help it. Jim |

I found his demo and his live performances original, magical, light-hearted, refreshing, and I remember laughing a lot.
That's more than I can say about almost all the other coin magic I've ever seen. It's a demo for god's sake. ....and you wonder why we don't hear from him much? In a room full of hundreds of people and a lot of distractions, he can sit down and within minutes have 60 people swarming around watching him do his effects. Laughing, clapping, total amazement. Can you?

Gotta tell'ya I agree with me... The original comment from Joe was insulting, I responded and them Mike Gallo did it with a bit bigger stick, giving the whipper-snapper a bit of his own callousness. Seems he didn't take it as well as he gave it to begin all this. His backup here, The One, seems pretty much by himself in trying to explain Joe's point of view while swiping at Mike Gallo. It's like this, if someone had likenend Joe's mom to a monkey in any way, he wouldn't take that too well, I don't think. But unlike his mom, Mickey is a proven performer, on an international level (oh, and with all due respect, as I haven't seen Joe's mom perform yet either), there you go. I think we should just drop all this, as more than anything else, this is not as much about supposed freedom of speech as it is about just being somewhat careful in being respectful to others, and not trying to explain broken glass "after" it's been shattered. Let's move on guys, as really everyone knows what is and what ain't, the proof is out there well-enough, far and wide, or not. My best to all.

Seems to me that anybody who can do what Mickey can do doesn't really need our help with his presentation or anything else. You can try saying it's not necessary to do a retention vanish that well, and maybe it isn't, but maybe that's something that's better said once you CAN do it that well. That way it doesn't seem so much like sour grapes. When Mickey does it people's jaws drop and he gets an audible gasp from the crowd and suddenly everybody's attention in the room is riveted on him. To me that's proof he's doing everything right.
If you think his range of material is limited I would say this: Anybody who's willing to put that much thought, effort and practice into perfecting moves the way he has will undoubtedly have more and more amazing things to show us as time goes on and he focuses his intellect on other moves. That's my prediction, anyway. |
