I was one of the few that attended the masterclass that is featured on 'the devil in disguise' and I can assure you DR is NOT heavily featured at all, I have also seen Pete perform more than just about anybody and the methods Pete uses are certainly not limited to DR, in fact DR is used very sparingly indeed. To give a few anecdotal examples :- I was out with Pete and another performer the other night having a few drinks and I described to Pete the conditions of a new and interesting effect by the great thinker Steve Shufton - his 'inexplicable' effect that is yet to be released. Without so much as a pause Pete replicated the described effect perfectly and under the same stated conditions not once but twice leaving me stunned but not at all surprised, as most who have met him will attest, he can jazz and pull off the seeming impossible whenever, wherever and to whoever, he left quite a few dealers at Blackpool stunned and feeling like they may as well pack their goods away. Just the other day during a Skype session with Café member Paul Shirley, Pete divined two thought of names, see a few posts up for the evidence on that. Is Pete the messiah?, well Monty Python would probably say he was "just a very naughty boy", but I'm not so sure, messiah? maybe - devil incarnate, very possibly, one of the most exciting mentalists to watch at the moment, most definitely to those that have been lucky enough to spend time with him and actually see him perform his 'miracles' in real life. There are lots of books with lots of covers, I don't think its wise to judge ill of Pete on just one..or even two, especially when so many respected mentalists around the world think otherwise.. |

Hi Peter,
Thanks for replying to my critique in person. Says a lot for you.I understand your defensiveness, my post was perhaps slightly brusque, but I was offering an honest opinion on the work I have seen. I suspect you are a man who would appreciate honesty. You're absolutely right when you say we can't like every mentalist, just as we can't like every band (my love of David Bowie was mocked by most of my classmates during the 80's)but I guess I was surprised that I didn't like your work, given my own preference in mental effects and performers. If you don't mind I would like to clarify a couple of points you make in your rebuttal: 1)"As for thinking that I was praying on the gullibility of the mentalism community with dare to be bold (thats absurd) and just not me (I am a big pussy cat!)" I think you have misunderstood me here. I would never accuse you of preying on anyone's gullibility, I wrote that my initial thought was that you may have been a satirist and Dare to Be Bold was a satire. I was shocked by the brazen and at times indiscriminate use of DR in most of the effects and tried to make sense of it in my mind as best I could. I understood reasonably quickly that you were, and are, sincere. 2)"The dvd contains almost no DR at all and you either understand the principle and how it is used or you Don't" I'm not quite sure what you mean here. Are you implying that anyone who doesn't agree with how you apply DR doesn't understand it? My first exposure in person to DR was watching Derren Brown lecture in 1999 and discussing the effects with him afterwards. He was kind enough to sell me a copy of his self-published book including his early experiments in DR and I've been interested in DR ever since. I also had some correspondence with a young Luke Jermay when he was first starting out on his mentalist quest. So although I am no expert, I hope I understand the concept sufficiently to hold an opinion on it. 3)"I only performed one dual reality piece in the penguin lecture :/ so I don't know how it could reflect upon the other materials performed?" I would categorize more than one of the effects you performed at Penguin as DR but perhaps we do, after all, have a different definition of the term. I am aware that you are held in massively high regard by many in the community and I'm sure the list of people you have consulted for is hugely impressive. You should be very proud of that fact. I have actually loved a couple of things I have seen you do so I hope you do not feel I am bashing you. I was simply offering an alternative opinion to the almost hagiographic response to the release of your DVD. I am clearly very much in the minority in my view of your work but I get the feeling you are the kind of guy who won't mind the odd dissenting voice. And anyway, anyone who is a fan of my hero Canasta can't be all bad! I wish you all the best with the DVD and your future projects. |

Bowie is not that bad...Though it did take some getting used to! Just to clarify I didn't mean you had no knowledge on the subject, I meant the material I put in the books, unless you have tried it, its difficult to understnd (If you get me) I am just often useless with making sense! Have a good day, all the best Pete x |

Ah! If Martin has talked to Derren Brown and saw Luke when he was beginner, he must be right!
I'm joking! Just like how to take some "famous" people to give credit to what you say ;-) To each his own, there's no accounting for taste and even if I understand Peter stand for his work, I don't think he has too. P-S: Dunninger shake my hand so it means I'm always right about DR!

Parmenion,
Is Luke Jermay famous? I wouldn't really categorise him as such. I mentioned the two gentleman in question not because of their fame or otherwise but because they were early adopters of DR. In any event it seems I misunderstood Peter's point so my rebuttal wasn't really necessary. PS I think your last sentence should probably read "Dunninger shook my hand". Incidentally, I think the so called Dunninger principle/ploy is another technique that has been stretched to breaking point by the latest generation of mentalists. Just an opinion... |

With that said I did preorder DID and can't wait for it to arrive. Even if a "new" technique like DR or the Dploy gets beaten to death by a new generation (and I'm not saying that's happened) its still great food for thought to see how they apply it. And one thing about mr turner - I've never met the man but his passion to connect with others shines through the screen. Gotta support the magicians and mentalists out there who don't seem like total ******bags and actually consider themselves on the same level as other people. Lookin fwd to this DVD! |

The dvd contains almost no DR at all and you either understand the principle and how it is used or you Don't [/quote] I liked the sound of this. I had heard from a few other fellow mentalists that your material Peter, was mainly on DR and instant st**ging and was a bit worried on how much I may actually perform from the material you present. However, this new bit of info makes me look forward to receiving the dvd even more!! kindly, Jordan |
