Interesting find, but one of the comments says:
"Hugh Williams is slang for slaves from Wales who were brought to work in the north. It was generally not accepted to talk about slaves who were not taken from far-away lands. So this "Hugh Williams" was the only survivor thing simply means that one of the slaves survived." If so, then it's a lot less amazing.

Thanks Landmark!!!! I'd like to chase that down. So there was slavery throughout all those years and this was a code name? Were there any men with that name really?
