Jerry Seinfeld is often cited as saying: "All magic is 'Here’s a quarter, now it’s gone. You’re a jerk. Now it’s back. You’re an idiot. Show’s over'."
I think the Ambitious Card is a trick of precisely this ilk. |

Jerry Seinfeld thinks magic is stupid. Hhmmm, guess I'll have to quit the business. While I enjoy his humor, my wife thinks he sucks. Maybe he should quit comedy. (where is that smilely face emoticon when ya need one?)
As far as certain tricks/routines go, everyone is different. Some like things, others don't. As stated before, I think straight jacket escapes are uninteresting. Come to think of it, I can probably count on one hand with fingers left over how many zombie ball and linking ring routines I like. Is there a right or wrong? I think not. |

I thought he was a jerk then - and I still think he is a jerk. I consider this as an "I don't care" because I am going to continue to do the ambitious card and making a quarter vanish. I don't care what jerks say about making a quarter vanish - or about the classic routine the ambitious card or any other routine. The ambitious card is a classic card plot invented by Hofzinser. Who invented many card plots - if I remember right he also did "everywhere and no where". Vernon was noted as to saying in the book Dai Vernon's Magical life - that Hofzinser was one of his hero's. I find it amazing how it seems like there are so many that seem to be ignorant about the classic card plots and where they come from.

To be serious I would hope you keep doing your routines your way based on nothing but the appreciation of your audience as you have bookings. I don't think you should change anything based on something a comic has to say. Or on whether I like the routine or not for that matter.
I was more poking fun than trying to say anything serious. I am poking fun at the ENDLESS routines with 12 phases and the obligatory "sometimes it gets so ambitious it goes for my wallet". Not a fan of endless Oil and Water routines either. But alas it was only a joke. Sorry to get the fur up on some.

Danny,
I understand what you're saying. I never understood the "card to wallet" thing either. Most card to wallet things are...."hey I put your card in my wallet and you didn't see me do it". That said, I do card to wallet. I will say that I feel mine is completely motivated. Our mutual friend, the late Bob Brown, complimented me on my handling. I believe I've mentioned it on here before. I end with my driver's license in the deck. The spec cuts the deck revealing my license (the license acts like a short or crimped card due to the thickness and is easily cut to). Upon opening my wallet, the signed card is in the wallet where my driver's license should be. By the way, I use Steve Draun's "Real Man's Wallet". patrick |

Jack Pyle used to do the card to wallet (not signed) as a running gag. I remember some magicians used to say they did not like that in his act. However the audience liked it.
Jimmy "Cards" Molinari showed me how to do a Oil and water that used to be in my act. I still like it and I will pull it out from time to time.

Alfonso is a master of the call-back.
You might consider a call-back as being different than a running gag, however.

"Who wants to see my best trick" I say that before every routine.
I might add "I mean it this time" That is the running gag I use. |
