Just wanted to update everyone on the progress of a new Learn-Ventriloquism.com Master Class.
At VentHaven, I sat down with Mark Wade, Ken Groves, Steve Petra, Sarah Jones and Bill DeMar and we discussed their script writing processes. The Ventriloquist Script Writing Master Class will be released within the next month. Originally, Master Classes were only going to be available to course members, but I have decided to create a separate version for non-members. There is some gold in this class - and I will be releasing some teasers each week until it goes live. You can find the first one at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICd6TNBsOSM Tom |

Sounds great. A good script is the big stumbling block for many of us.

Bulls beware -
The second commercial has just been released. The course has been edited down to over two and a half hours of video. This teaser clip will give you an idea of what goes into creating successful material. Steve Petra -
I will be in touch soon so you can take a sneak peek in advance. Your interview turned out great. In fact, I've just been working with my tech and the Master Class is looking incredible. Better than I imagined. It definitely won't be the course for everyone, but for people who want to write their own material this will be gold! Tom |

Writing original material is something everyone should strive for. A spark of originality can set so many performance elements into motion. I love Ken Groves' comment "5 minutes of good material = 100 hours of work."

Hi Tom and everybody
It is amazing to see how you American take the serious of the Art. We do not know such a high level work in Europe, especially in Franch speaking countries. I am trying to issue again one of our greatest ventriloquists, Jean de Merry's book, and at the moment I was about to get all persmissions, we descover that a pale vent has issued, a few years ago, a complete course (under his own name) which is a simple copy of that great book! Unfortunately, humour is different in Europe and in the States. And moreover all vents in Europe do not understand English. So I think we cannot follow you on all ways... I do not know if we do not work on ventriloquism because our Art is not really popular or if it is not popular because we do nos really work for its progress... Sometimes I wish I was born on the other side of the Atlantic... Thanks again, Tom, for your help to get some DVDs I would never have gor without you... Frego |

Frego, you raise a good point. American vent is more slap stick type humour compared to even Australia.
I believe vent in Australia (like Europe) has not progressed rather than simply not being popular (but now that I think about it that may be true for ventriloquism everywhere). As a ventriloquist I believe you should decide what you want to convey with your art. Do you want to be a stand up comic or do you have other plans, preach religion for example (although it's not my thing)? |

Not sure I agree with you Aussie - slap stick is a pratfall physical style of comedy. You may be thinking stand up, and too many vents do set-up punchline, set-up punchline style acts. Or they follow dialog books from the 1950's, without modifying the material to fit themselves and their characters. Even with preaching religion, ventriloquists rely on humor to capture their audience's attention and convey their message.
In my interview with Sarah Jones, who is from Australia, she reveals her script writing processes are in line with those of her American counterparts. David Strassman is an excellent example of a vent who is popular in Australia, but his style of comedy, while unique, is not far from the patterns used by other vents like Ken Groves. Ken Groves stated plainly - too many "ventriloquists" have material that sucks - and then wonder why they aren't going anywhere. It may not be a popular statement, but if someone isn't achieving a degree of success as a performer, they should look at themselves first. Lip control, manipulation, material and stage presence create a package. This Master Class won't be for everyone. If you want simple - then stick to the dialog books. This course is for ventriloquists who want to learn the tools that can help them convey their art in their own style. Tom |

Frego -
You assume I intend to teach you how to write American comedy. That is not what this Master Class is about! YOU have to write the material. That means YOU have to do the homework to turn your ideas into comedy that will play to your audience. This class simply lays out the thought processes and tools that make creating your own material easier. We teach you how to develop ideas, how to edit to create the best possible picture in people's minds and how to hone or refine your material before you ever walk on a stage. We give you insights, inspiration and technique to help you develop material that works for you. On the English - yes, that does create a problem. However I recently had communications with one of my students from France who has the same issue. He was able to use the original course to learn ventriloquism by translating the written text into French, and then watching my videos for the techniques. He is interested in the script writing course, so I am having the videos transcribed so the text of the videos may be downloaded. With BabbleFish and other text translators available online, this helps to shrink the language barrier. We live in an exciting age of technology. I am thrilled my original course has been able to help so many in such a short period of time. I look forward to helping others improve their technique and programs as well. Tom |

Thank you Tom for your clarity, I didn't actually say it is slap-stick rather "slap-stick like". I do maintain however that Australian humour, like England humour, is different to American. Sarah Jones does a lot of cruise ship and kids work and from what I understand she does it very well.
I'm not suggesting any one type of humour is better than the other of course. Your course is good, is there any chance of written course notes or downloadable content? I know many, many people have asked you this in the past and you advise that it will always be available for viewing via your website after fees are paid. But websites do get closed down sometimes and the content is only ever available to anyone under the discretion of the website owner. I suppose a lot of people want more control over what they pay for. For example Mark Wade and Steve Petra (who you have interviewed in your Masterclass) both have DVD's available which covers the same kind of topics they're discussing in greater detail than what they outline in your interviews. Steve Taylor has three dvd's for only $89 which provide the same information if not more than your course does. The point is for a small investment a person can have the hard copy of what they're paying for and that's probably why people pose this question to you. |
