I have this idea about an escape illusion in my head:
a vertical gurney is stationed on top of a large square platform on the stage. 2 remote controlled sentry guns, similar to the ones used in the special edition dvd of the movie ALIENS are in front of the gurney. at the sides of the gurney are 2 gasoline tanks. the magician is to be chained to the vertical gurney, and escape in 40 seconds time, because the sentry guns are computerized and when 40 seconds pass by, everything goes BOOM. anyways, the performance is: The magician escapes ONLY at the nick of time, the machine guns blast nonstop up until the last round, but the magician stops the bullets in mid-air a la MATRIX RELOADED. And with just a wave of his hands, all the bullets except ONE drop to the flooring of the platform. Anyways, the one bullet is left suspended in mid-air, spinning; ready to be released by the magicians "telekinetic hold", the magiician leaps off the platform, the one bullet is RELEASED from the magicians telekinesis and the tanks go BOOM right when the magician is in the area of safety. my question is, can this illusion be done by the oldest of performance artists? (I'm talking about US, magicians who do live acts) or can it only be done by the Wachowski brothers? This is a sincere question |

David,
Always remember that nothing is impossible, if you know how. What you described could be acomplished a few ways, depending of budget of course. The easiest way would be to set a th**** system for each bullet. It all depends on wether you want the bullets to visually shoot out of the cannon or just appear that way. It would involve quiet a bit of patience to rig something like this though. How many times will you be performing this illusion? The th**** system would rely on small weights and most likely a few assistants. Tell us your performing surrounding / requirements and we'll figure out a way to make it happen, it's a great idea by the way. Anyway hope that helps, Mike Rogers Ps: "Nothings impossible, if you only know how"

I think this sounds like it would be a good illusion if it could be pulled off, but I see one potential flaw that may or may not be a problem. Ok, I'm assuming that this would be a large scale illusion for a large audience. The problem I see, is that at the end of your illusion you want the last bullet to just "hang" there. How is anyone going to see that bullet? It's so small that no one except MAYBE a few people in the front row would have a good view of the "hanging" bullet. This sounds to me like it is particularly a problem because this bullet is an integral part of your illusion and I don't think the audience would appreciate it much if they can't see what's happening.

Actually, I'm not performing any illusions yet I'm mostly doing close up and impromptu, but since you guys have shared your input and told me that this *is* possible, I appreciate it. thanks

You can do what ever you want. A lot will depend on price. Wellington Ent. are great at figuring out impossibilities.

Did you have to say "oldest"? Lucy and I are 63 and 58 but enjoy doing grand illusion most of all. It is something we can do together. Maybe we are just very young for our ages!
If it were possible, it wouldn't be magic would it? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Yeah, definitely possible! To solve the issue of the audience not seeing the bullet, you could always set up a camera to film the action and project it live?
This could be a great theme (competely ripped off of course!) for a show!
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are
