Hi there, I am interested in any experiences that 'psychological mentalists' could share in which they were able to actually demonstrate 'the real thing'.
For instance, the following is from my blog, and I am sure that others must have stories which are similar: Well, I had a rather fun experience the other day after one of my shows. I had been approached by a group of people, each eager to ask me questions. One of those in the group was a young lady, and inevitably the question she posed was along the lines of "How did you do" such and such. I explained to her that a lot of what I did during that particular experiment relied on my ability to pay careful attention to eye access cues and body language. If she was skeptical of my answer initially, the disbelief evaporated a moment later, as I had a wonderful opportunity to provide her with an impromptu demonstration of the ability to read body language to discern thoughts. As the young lady came into the room, I noticed that she had been accompanied by a friend, who remained in the same spot at the back despite the fact that her more inquisitive friend pushed closer to me. I also paid close attention to the torso of each person. Both were fully facing me, but an examination of the feet told a story all their own. The young lady who was quizzing me had both her feet pointing directly at me, while her friend, positioned a yard or so to the rear, had one foot pointed at me, and the other at the door. The proximity and foot cues of each party allowed me to infer details of what was going on in the mind of each person. When pressed for an example, therefore, of my assertions that I could read body language, I smiled and spoke to the young lady in front of me. "Well, for instance, I can tell by your strong eye contact, the full exposure of your torso, and the placement of your feet that you are genuinely intrigued with your interaction with me, and could continue chatting with me for some time. By contrast, your friend, in the green shirt... (at this point, I gestured toward the young lady in the back)your friend is interested in what we are saying, but has more pressing matters to attend to and is anxious to leave. She is, however, too polite to hurry you along. As she has been kind enough to offer you a lift, I believe you ought to get going." There were about a dozen people circled around me at this point, yet no face was more astounded than that of the young lady in the green shirt, as she confirmed that she was indeed offering her friend a ride and was in a hurry to get somewhere. This is an entertaining side note to what was a very enjoyable performance. But I tell it so that those interested in the methods I employ may have some insight regarding these methods. I wish to direct any interested party to one of the best texts I have read on the subject of body language - "What Every Body Is Thinking" by the incomparable Joe Navarro. As the example above illustrates, I can say honestly that the knowledge this book contains has allowed me to literally deconstruct a person's thought process, reading the signals that they didn't even know they were sending, and astounding them by then revealing to them what they believed to be their private thoughts held in their minds alone. Remember, watch carefully, listen closely, and you can discern more about those around you than you would have ever believed possible! Best, Atlas So that is the sort of thing I am looking for. I have a reason, which I may reveal later. |

Look for old speech textbooks from the 50-80's -- especially on "interpersonal communications." These techniques were part of general communication theory -- nothing to do with mentalism. Many of these texts had anecdotal material of possible use to you. Certainly read the two volume set on "The Structure of Magic" that led to the development of NLP

Thanks for the feedback, I do have a lot of Bandler and Grindler's stuff. I would still be interested in hearing any instances where 'the real thing' happened to any of you.

Isn't everything we do supposed to be the "real stuff"?

Well, of course what we do is supposed to LOOK like the real thing, and many people present their effects as though they actually are such.
I want to know if, in the light of the changes in mentalism since the release of the PS series, more people have found that with a little extra effort, their claims can be demonstrated and validated in some cases. Jon Thompson's NM series was a step in that direction, in my opinion, and there are more and more people who are actually blending the classic methods with effects that have a real basis in psychology. I'm curious to know if any other mentalists out there have developed genuinely psychological approaches to mind reading and if they have had success practicing them. |

Your website clearly states you do the real thing, yet with a bit of googling, members of the general public can just as easily reach this thread, where you contradict that.
There are protected areas of the forum to prevent that kind of incongruity. I think that's what John C was getting at. |

Quicknotist, thank you for your insightful note, I appreciate all feedback.
I don't think I implied that, though a reader may infer it. What my site actually says is that: "Each performance places emphasis on displaying the inherent value in paying clear attention to (and gleaning knowledge from) data obtained through our five senses." And I do have material that I perform that is strictly based in psychology. I would be happy to share it with you if you would PM me. This thread is really about seeing if any other mentalists are taking steps to create effects which are truly method (in the classic sense) free. |

I also can't access the protected areas for another 22 posts, but message received -I will make sure I am careful in my statements outside them. I appreciate your guidance.

Principles of Kinesic Interview and Interrogation by Stan Walter is a great book on cold body reading.
Also invaluable for the psychological, "real stuff" mentalist is the 4 volume "Collected Papers of Milton Erickson" and "A Teaching Seminar with Milton Erickson" by Zeig.

I downloaded the audio book "What Every Body Is Thinking" from Audible.de and listened to it while taking my daughter to Freiburg (5 hours each way) it was very informative and you can use some of the things in the book straight away. Especially the feet thing... But the accent is too much for one day get the paper version and just imagine an annoying accent... Whoops! Spoilt it for you now, haven't I?

I performed a fair amount of Helstromism back in the late 60's. Once in a while it was possible to drop the volunteer's hand and proceed alone.
I believe that I was tuning into clues from the entire audience -- their unconscious desire to see me succeed told me "yes" or "no" to any action. I don't know how one can prepare or train for such empathic communication -- except to command trust in everything you do in life. So, I think this qualifies for your search -- trust, empathy and confidence never spoken -- just embraced. I might do this agin some time -- if I can find a group of serious folks who can live without a cell phone for a couple of hours.

Funsway, yes, contact mind reading is an excellent example!! Have you read Dariel Fitzkee?
And to Mr. Dowd, I am pleased that you enjoyed "What Every Body Is Thinking", it is an excellent book, partly because it delves so deeply into the Limbic System and its functioning. Should you choose, an excellent follow up is "The Definitive Book of Body Language" by Allan And Barbara Pease. Not so strong at explaining why, but very, VERY definitive. |

I'm not too keen on him to be honest, but that's sometimes a good reason to read someone's work...think he's gone too far with the exposure side of things...

It is a good reason to read - Differing opinions are always a stimulant as they challenge accepted belief systems. This often results in creativity.
My perspective on exposure has been expressed on another thread. |
