Any tips on a coca-cola product to manipulate. I am working on a Coca-Cola routine and would like to do some manipulation but not to sure what would be easiest to manipulate. bottles, cans, coasters etc.
I am also looking for a list of tricks in which can be performed with bottles, cans, liquids, and glasses. Let me know what you think Teddy

Teddy:
This is an interesting concept and theme and certainly could work out nicely for you. Have you given any thought to your character on stage and whether or not you want to tell more of a story with the theme? It is something worth thinking about. An idea for you is to create a set of coke bottle caps. These would be made to look like bottle caps with the coke logo on them. Make them the size of a jumbo coin and you could do some really nice cd and coin moves with them. It would tie in well and could be effective for you. You cold also do flip stick moves with an object made to look like a straw. Perhaps you place it into the bottle and they see the coke color in the straw. You lift it out and pretend to sip the coke thru the straw. You vanish and do flip sticks with it and the coke keeps appearing inside the straw. Very easy to do but relates nicely to your theme idea as well. I think doing an airborne is a given as that would work well as a part of a sequence of moves. Perhaps you take out a napkin and whipe your mouth with it. The napkin vanishes only to appear back inside a coke bottle on your table. Perhaps your table is made to look like an old time soda machine. That could look really nice. Have one side of it vertically be a place where coke bottles can be stored after they are produced. Then you can also have a coin slot. This would open you up for a fun opening sequence that has a bit of comedy. Perhaps you walk out and see the coke machine. You want a coke but realize you have no money. You then go into a miser's dream sequence before getting the bottle for the next sequence of moves in the act. These are just a few of the many ideas that come to my mind for this. Let me know what you think. If you would like, PM me and I can fill you in on other ideas and concepts. Enjoy.

Thank you very much for those effects. right now I am working on a list of ideas so that I can put the act together. I am looking for this to be a stage act aswell and for competitions so I have to keep that in mind when choosing effects.
Thanks again, Teddy

Not to toss cold water but ... Coca-Cola IS a registered trademark, so before you start building a career based on Coke's brands, you might make sure that you aren't going to run into any copyright issues.
I don't wish to be negative, but I used to work at Disney and I know how jealously and zealously a large corporation can guard its brand names. |

Bob does bring up a good point. It certainly is worth looking into before putting out all that money an effort.
With that said, If your going to be doing a competition act, make sure your act is unique and different. that you have a well defined character and a good theme that is more then just themed props. A good theme is like a magical play.

Sounds like your doing the right thing by approaching them. Your also right that you need the show and act finalized and the paperwork all done ahead of time. What type of effects are you thinking about doing? Manipulation style act?

I am looking at a mix. One illusion, some manipulation, general magic.
a 10 minute act that is full of magic, one that has too many effects to name after a performance. I was also thinking about a vest change from say a sprite vest to a rootbeer vest to a coca-cola vest without bringing attention to the fact that I changed them. how do you think that would look? Teddy

If a stage or trade show... have a coke bottle made you can fit inside of for a production of a person.
Have passe passe bottles made with replica coke bottles. Do Zombie type routine with coke bottle. NOT ALL stuff should be coke bottles/cans... that would be boring... Sucker Silk to Coke Can has been marketed, check that out. You can do Passe bottles with liquor bottle changing nplaces with coke can. Coin in coke bottle. Abbott used to sell a vanishing coke bottle in a tube with straws around it?? Not sure of details on it. Airborn glass w/coke Try different flavors and push their NEW 'vanilla' one to make impression.

Ok well just keep in mind that too many effects in any one act is not always a good thing. You must remember that you do not always have to impress the audience by how much you can get away with in ten minutes.
Your there to entertain them. Sometimes having fewer GREAT and clever routined tricks is much better then too many that do not flow well. Also, if you have too much going on, it is often times harder for the audience to follow. you need to put in pauses in the act after sequences for the audience to take a breather and appluade what you just did. The vest idea is a good one but I would only do it once and do it at the end as an after thought. I think it would be much stronger for you. Are you planning on a whole show themed around coke or just a 10 min act?

Some good ideas, Pete.
You could also do a free floating coca cola can - as the hookup wouldnt be a problem (think ring pull). What do you think? |

A six pack production would also be pretty cool as well.

How about making a coca cola cap appear on your head? OR do a zombir with it behind a coca cola towel and then have it float up and land on your head.
Although this could make you end up looking like a PR for coke. Kyle, once again, all great ideas! |

Thanks Maylor:
I think the key to this act will be the etoryline or theme you use in the act. I do not think it is good enouigh just to have it themed around Coke. I would take it the extra step and tell a magical story with the Coke elements. That would bring the act up a notch and make it even stronger and more entertaining. What might be nice is to tie them in to some of the old Coke commercials and songs. For example... curtains are closed and before they open you hear a rapid fire of some of the best known and recognized Coke commercials. Ones that everyone knows and can associate with. The endinding, that would be very cool, would be to have you bow and start to walk off stage. Then you hear the classic Mean Joe Green commercial come on. You hear him say "Stop.. Hey Kid..... Catch!" You catch a jeresey thrown from off stage." You then mouth "Thanks Mean Joe" Then face the audience and wink as the spotlight shines on your face to a black out. That would really tie it in but give it that extra kick that would really make the act. What do you all think?

I really like that storyline with using old commercials. I have been brainstorming all day on storylines and one that kept stuck with me is having no change to get a cola and just cant seem to get one through the whole act. the finale would be finally getting a cola.
I am still working on the story line but I will keep that one in mind as I think it would work very well. I was also thinking about making a production box (human size) as the vending machine and have a waitress appear with a tray with a glass of coke on it, as in the 50's diners. what do you think? Thank you to everyone for all the great ideas, I cannot wait for this act to come together. Teddy

I think you are NOW heading down the right path and thinking more creatively. I like your ideas and the storyline or plots you are playing around with seem to make sense. Keep at it and let me know how you are progressing.

Any effect can work, but I think Teddy is getting the right idea about exploring your character more as well ad the theme and storyline the act is telling while on stage.
