For one word reveal - Area book test from Looch - just as good as MOAB, cheaper and more compact
For mutiple reveals and theme - Luna(any one of the 3) with Pearly Gates from Outlaw or Witches Almanac also from Outlaw |

Many of the book tests listed here are excellent but may be of no value to you. Without knowing your performing requirements it will be difficult, if not impossible, for us to provide solid recommendations. Without knowing more about you we're just ****ing in the dark.
The more we know about you and your performing situation, the fewer darts we'll need to throw at the proverbial wall before we hit the mark.

You might try Spineless for being usable both as a book and a Magazine test.

Just want to expand on the brief remarks I made earlier in this thread. Friday night, in a 50 minute presentation, I performed 2 booktests (1) Area and (2) Pearly Gates and Luna 1936 together.
Now, I love Area and think it's wonderful and will continue to use it regularly as it always gets a good reaction early on in the set. However, the audience reaction while good is nowhere near to the entrancement you can create with the longer period piece. Admitedly PG and Luna requires more acting and presentational ability but this allows you to go in some many different directions. Yes, the second option is not for beginners but neither is the first either. My point, I guess, is that if you are starting to collect books that you can actually enjoy using in a show and with which you can create real atmosphere, Outlaw is the place to start. There are many to choose from. Have a look and decide which ones work for you. I only mention Luna because I just recently used it and it is now on sale for the ridiculous price of $60. You could pay several times that for a test that would offer you far less in terms of performance potential. And I have no stake in this whatsoever. Roth is not going to give me a discount for sayin this. He usually does that anyway. So, it seems that maybe at $60 a shot all 3 Lunas might be a good idea but depending on your budget, it might be test to include Pearly Gates even if it means only getting one Luna(I have 1936). The link is brilliant and it adds so much to the presentation imo. The audience on Friday was wide eyed and full of concentration as I walked them through the graveyard and then took them to the asylum. Yes. the asylum experience hit hard, but would have had less impact without the graveyard experience leading into it. I would be remiss if I did not point you in the direction of Prof BC and Vic Nadata, each of whom produced booktests with Outlaw and whom now have their own operations. Just a few thoughts on booktests in the real world. Hope it helps. |

I know this thread is a little old. Having read the book tests in Anneman and Corinda I am interested in the various methods that are employed. Does anyone know if there are any treatises or a book that has a large number of methods 'under one roof'?
A lot of books have one or two different methods so it would be nice to have them all in one place. Maybe I'll just make a list for myself! Sea.
I love post its

Look at the Outlaw "Book Test" type of products. In my opinion they offer so much more than a traditional book test (they are often cheaper than the traditional book test also).

I have to agree with Inert, Mark Mason's Word in a Million is clever and can be used with other effects as well.

I never did a "book test" ... rather I presented a telepathy demonstration that revealed several thoughts from several audience members using several different books. For me, this was an important difference.
This demonstration was my only demonstration of telepathy in my corporate mentalism act. In my corporate mentalism act, my goal was to demonstrate a specific mental ability only once. This isn't the only approach to building a mentalism act, but it worked well for me. My final thoughts on presenting a telepathy demonstration (with books) is found in Thought-Full Teleapthy. |

I know that this is a rather old post, however for what its worth, here is my 2 cents. It all boils down to your own performing style and what you want to achieve from the effect you are performing. the audience type that you perform to and of course your budget! there are many comedy book tests on the market and many are reasonably priced. if you want the effect of genuine mind reading then I would suggest using a gimmicked book but one that has been cleverley weaved into the story to leave the book examinable, these do require quite a bit of effort and memorisation from the performers point of view. That being said, you get out what you put in. also it is better to use a 'well known' title to create more of a connection with your audience and takes away any doubt about the book being a 'trick' book from your audiences mind as it is a book that they may have once read their self. if you want to do your own research about book tests then I can not recommend highly enough the book, 'Mainly Mental, Vol 2, Book tests' (C.L.Boarde 1950) this is packed full with hints and tips and a wealth of knowledge. also coriander 13 steps has its own step dedicated to Book Tests.
hopefully this may help someone. |

A word in a thousand made with a dictionary. Gives the illusion that any word can be just thought of. I don't think any other book test really conveys the same feeling? I only own about 30 book tests so I may not be the best person to answer this question? I'm also mostly a magician so my view might not be the best? I will say however that when I perform mentalism people really like that the most in my show and say things like "your magic is good but that mind stuff is real right?" I just smile.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.
If I'm not responding to you? It's because you're a TROLL! |
