I didn't take it out of context. It's 6 inches above mine, and I quoted almost your entire post.
I'm not sure what the nasty comments and name calling you mentioned have to do with this. I was only commenting on your one post and point. Based on the hype, the truth, the reviews and many postings about Mr. Scryer's works, and especially given the location of those, it should be easy to understand why someone would have a different experience than you - why someone would order the book thinking one thing and receiving something different. I was one of them, and I'm certain there are others based on the few messages in this thread. The book was different than what I expected. It wasn't a big deal, and it's wasn't worth a posting, as I figured I may grow into appreciating what it offered. But until then, I'll not look forward to your sticks and mocking you say I and others like me deserve - even metaphorically. Because THAT is the nasty comments I see. And as a professional musician, I cannot agree with your conclusion: Quote:

When I wanted to learn a new technique or reach a new level of mastery, I went to a LOT of other players. Not just the ones that played the same instrument as me, and certainly not just the ones that played the same genre that paid my bills. This should explain to you why some people ordered the book. Everyone's expectations were different, so I see your above comments as divisive - another case of separating the 'readers' from the 'entertainers'. And I'd go to Bonnie Raitt. |

You will interpret according to your own bias, same as everyone else...
Though you are taking my comments personally... Bonny is not a patch on kelly joe phelps, though both glen campbells are top notch guitarists...

Let's be fair to each other please. I read the book from A to Z, I enjoy reading and try to learn and improve all the time, I hate stop learning.Â
In general the book doesn't contain much new to me, some articles I did enjoy, most were (for me) not very interesting as I read things I know or have read before or partly do already. Some contributions were IMHO the art filling pages saying almost nothing using many words. Probably something we have to expect reading a compendium. Jan

You need to view the Scryer books in context. The Black and White books are clearly called "Psychic's" guides. This immediately removes them from the standard magic/mentalism "bunch of tricks" books. I read them to learn from the THINKING that goes into them. Personally I find the way Scryer presents his ideas -- the way he THINKS -- to be revolutionary.
The material is excellent...but these books let you share the thoughts of a brilliant thinker. David

David this is one problem with this place that magiciand and mentalists and readers don't see it the same way. Not a good mix I think. Just my opinion. No problems.

An easy way to avoid all this hassle is to wait for a review of the product by someone you trust or have seen making posts that are in sympathy with your performance styles and ideas.
I typically think an honest review will address both the positive and negative aspects of the product, talk about audience reaction, and evaluate value for money. |

I think, and this may have been said already but I didn't read every post, is that there are often occasions where the subtleties aren't readily understood or perhaps more importantly, aren't appreciated because as a performer you're not ready for them. I think that a lot of seasoned performers hyping something although I think on rare occasions could be collusion of an unintended sort, it seems from my experience it's more likely that they understand the nuances that led to the way things are constructed, have come up against these challenges themselves, and admire the solutions certain things provide.
That and of course style, character etc all play a role in appreciating one authors take. Dave |

So... reading through Scryer and Friends isn't going to teach any performer, who has already done a reasonable amount of study, any thing really new from a method perspective. Subtleties, nuances, styles of performance and methods (That I know) used in ways that I wouldn't have thought of... are in abundance all throughout the the book. Anyone who sais they read the whole thing... and got NOTHING from it... is kidding them selves. Just my 34 cents. |
