Ekuth, I have done that ever since I got "X Marks the Spot" by Br. Paul. In fact I talked to him and asked him about those same doubts. Sorry to tell you, but you're wrong. Every now & then I print up a group of small flyers saying "NO DRINKS, JUST TIPS" then under it I say something like enjoy a 10 minute show of Paddy with his magical rope. After the show Paddy will pass the hat. You have to hit 6 or 7 places but you can pull in over $100 every night. I have even done it in a piano bar when the piano player took her break.

Well, I'm glad to know that there's reasonable folks out there *somewhere*, Paddy...
I just haven't run into any yet, as that was an almost verbatim quote... lol.

Paddy... Good for you. It has and will work forever. Check with the manager or owner, show 'em the flyer, pop a 10 to 15 second visual trick to show you've got chops and coconuts and when they say okay to the 10 or 15 minute show in the lounge, do your stuff. I've got the notes X Marks the Spot available at http://www.BrotherPaulMagic.com on CD. Or the Bonus CD get's all the stuff.
You can make a good living AND asked back to do it again and again. It's all up to you Ekuth... Yep. You get those too, but it only takes about 5 minutes to move on and the next place, next door may say, "Go for it." It's not a shoe in, it's just buskin'... Best of luck and my hearts be light and hats be heavy! |

Ekuth:
I just followed several posts and I'm going to P.M. you. Since you are an AZ guy, check with Shawn Greere. I've been friends with him since 1987 and turned him on to this busking technique. If I remember rightly, he used it with success. In fact I remember Shawn, Gene Urban, Tommy Frank and I went out one night for drinks and ended up taking on 4 different places with our shows to see who could "crack the nut." Shawn did a restaurant in Scottsdale. Tommy did one in North Phoenix. (He had to work hard getting the manager to do it, but... It's Tommy and he pulled it off.) Gene did Baxter's in Phoenix and I did a disco in Phoenix between songs. I can't say we killed, but we had a ball and created a great memory. What a night. We forgot the golden rule of saying, "No Drinks, Tips Only." ;o) So it works. It's a challenge. It is also consistent and when I was doing this, once I popped the show, I got asked, by the owners and managers to come back sometime and do it again. You have to be fast. Hit the bar or lounge hard. Pass out the flyers, set your table fast. Do it like on the streets. Make some noise give em 3 tricks in 10 to 15 minutes pass that, in my case, coffee can, and then say thanks to the guy that let you perform and get out a there. Go next door and do it again. It's a grind, but in the 70's and 80's I was doing $25 to $50 a joint and stopped when I got tired. Acceptance was about 50/50 but it was a job. Best of luck and continued success. |

Steve Spill, when he was a young man, would go into bars and perform and hat people just saying he was trying to get something to eat or get a room for the night.
"Door Knocking" is still a popular technique in Real Estate. Takes about 100 doors knocked to get a lead. Many top stars would would do it each day. 30 leads per month translated into solid listings and made them top sellers. The fear of rejection keeps people from using these techniques, but they do work. |

I am going to go out and try this, this week. I am in Atlanta and don't give a F%*#@ about being told no. I am going to do it right after Christmas. December 26th and onward. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks Zombie. Those are kind words. No matter how many times I do my show, there is always room to improve.
My father had never seen me perform. 20+ years doing magic and he had never seen a single performance. Recently on his birthday he was having a party. After dinner everyone went downstairs and was tasting beer. I walked down with my street rig and set it up. I walked up to his bar and one of his guests and started my sponge routine. That got their attention! Then I " showed them the ropes..." I did cups and balls as the finale with out a hat load, just 4 oranges (tangerines actually) with one of his friends standing right next to me. They laughed, cheered, and applauded. One guy said it was the most entertaining 15 minutes he had seen in a long time. The best part though, was the next day. My dad sent me a message telling me how great I was. That I was really good. That meant a lot to me. But it also showed how far I have come. |

Nice Gr8gorilla...
I haven't seen you work, but I like the las post. You should have no problem. If you have questions, P.M. me. Also I had a dad that, for most of my magic career, would call me and ask if I got a job and was I still interrupting peoples dinner and putting those sponges in there hand... He was a great corporate exec and wanted me to do something with my life. One day one of of his civic organizations booked me for a Christmas Show. I saw him in the back and noticed him poking the guy next to him and pointing at me. He was saying, "That's my son..." It was the best day of my magical life. RIP Dad. So hop in there are some other things to this that you may need to make it work. You've got my direct email address in your P.M. Drop me a line. I've got something for you. |

Ed, never had a problem getting permission. Didn't always get the first place I asked but I kept asking until I lined up 4 or 5 spots for that night. Least I ever made was $120 and the most was $350

Yep... The system works, but I do agree, it's a numbers game. It was in the 50/50 ball park with me, but I never got skunked. ONe of the plus factors is that most of the time, the managers or owners catch part or all of the 15 minute show and I picked up gigs and got invited back quite a few times. It's just another way to work and stay dry and warm at the same time.
Best of luck to everyone this winter no matter what you end up doing. Keep the magic strong and alive. |

Could I have a bit of clarification on the flyers? as in, are you passing them around to the tables/bar patrons and then going into the show? just making a very few to hand to the managers/owners?

Make a bunch. Hand 'em out. Wording is important. List your tricks. Make it a playbill. You know... "One Night Only... Too much to it to lay out here, but that's the jist...
