Well, the spelling of pterodactyl certainly is "modern"! And while abhor the spelling, I love the idea, Pete!
I find it interesting how many mentions there have been of DC's (Steinmeyer's) Elevator, but no one has mentioned that it was Doug Henning who first introduced the illusion and it was his exclusively until his retirement. On a personal note, I've always preferred his presentation of it as well. His was the only one I ever saw where at the "showing empty" phase the "shaft" was brick, and after the appearance the interior had changed to the elevator cab. |

Actually in some later versions, Frank, DH's elevator's inside was the transformed into the "rainbow /clouds" art he used.
And Doug's handling of it when it first came out back then was "very magical". I remember being in the live audience when it was used to film "The Magic Show - The Movie" in Toronto. The elevator was also used at the end of the show to have him and "the Lion Tamer" disapppear back into the clouds. MM |

MM, The rainbow/clouds was the interior to which I was referring. Not a traditional elevator cab, mind you, but definitely a Henning-esque one!
I always loved his method and handling of the effect. I remember seeing him in San Francisco on tour in about 1984 and he opened the second act with it. Debbie was in a purple tailcoat tux and produced Doug in the same tailcoat. Now, knowing his method and this costuming, imagine how the illusion looked from not too far off center! I saw the show three times that weekend, and no one ever noticed the method. Some great misdirection in that presentation! |

I know that Doug Henning was the first to present the Elevator illusion, but unfortunatly I've never seen his presentation.
I have to agree with pepka, it's certainly due to David Copperfield's presentation that this particular illusion is such a sucess. I've seen it on TV and once live in his show and I must say that everything fitts to make it a great stage entrance to set the mood for the show thanks to the music and the lighting. I like aswell his Motorcycle Shadow Box and One but his elevator entrance is top noche. Oliver. |

Oliver-
With all due respect, the illusion was quite successful long before Copperfield got his mitts on it. In my humble opinion, DC's presentation, while quite good, is over-produced. I personally prefer the simplicity of Doug's presentation. |

Seeing David opening the show with the elevator lowering from very high in a proper theater, the self-opening and moving arrow, then his appearance mid-air before the elevator "landed" and DC walking forward. Very magical indeed.
My mind actually thought...that's a perfect magical entrance. The metaphor and the magic were exactly right. |

Frank, thanks to you I've seen the video now, and I have to agree aswell with you. Doug Henning made a great piece of magic art out of this illusion. Simple, direct and still with a meaning for the audience.
If I remeber aswell, I've seen the same illusion presented (same prop look) by Sigfried & Roy on german television. Oliver. |

I have been watching Darcy Oake's apearance over and over again and I not only enjoyed the opening, I also really liked his choice of music as it fits so well.

A couple of memorable opening illusions that are also appearances that I have seen are:
Penn and Teller; where two suspended, hinged, angled sheets of glass suddenly close together and smash to reveal the duo standing in the frames that held the glass sheets. And... Christian Fechner's opening effect where he stands up from a chair that is empty... until he gets up from it.

I'm gonna steal Pete's idea but I'm gonna need a much, much bigger pterodactyl. Maybe I can get one cheap after the "How to Train Your Dragon" arena show closes in a few years.

Oh yes! I forgotten to add Lu Chen's version of Instant Babe Illusion by Daniel Summers. I first saw this on another thread and I recently saw it performed live as he did his tour "Dazzle" in Singapore. It was really impressive. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_1GUjzYO......t=1m18s/ I also seen his previous tour show which was about 2 years ago and he had another nice opening illusion. It can be seen from this video: http://youtu.be/j_1GUjzYO6Y?t=1m19s Enjoy!

There's another one that impressed me a lot. J.C. Sum's appearance from a wall on top of a set of stairs.
I've once seen a video of it. It was on Singapour TV presented live for a foundation money collection. Oliver. |
