Hi Paul,
I saw your show last night at The Magic Castle and only managed to shake your hand afterwards with a quick "Fantastic show" comment before you had lots of the people coming up to say hi! I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your show, its very timely message, and of course your brilliant magic. Seeing your cups and balls routine in person was a treat for me since it's considered legendary within our art! The iPad routines set to music are instant classics in my mind. Your ending routine was almost chilling to say the least, and left the audience unsettled - but in a good way. When I read "Steel & Silver" many years ago, the routines in it changed the course of my magical direction. Your effects and your approach to magic had a tremendous influence on me, and to this day I find myself going back to it for inspiration and ideas. For example, in your effect "The Headache Trick," I use the card box gimmick for that routine in a similar way for one of my own routines involving a walnut (the pieces of the walnut "appear" inside the card box). I have also been doing Triple Die-Lemma for years but have just started to do it with another object - mini skulls, with big skulls appearing at the end. Halloween season is approaching and it felt like a great routine, and when that big skull pops out at the end - it's quite striking! Anyway, I was hoping to tell you these things last night but wasn't able to, so I just thought I'd send you a response to this post to tell you Thank You for all you've done for magic, and for being a constant inspiration to me. Your Braindrops experience is definitely showing a different side of you - much more playful and emotional, and it's been refreshing to follow your career and see where that magic brain of yours takes you! Again, thank you! Anthony Asimov

I have seen you perform the 'Steel Cups & Balls' routine in person many years ago in the close-up gallery at the Magic Castle. Sure wish I could be there to see 'Braindrops'.
Sounds like it was a resounding success. Ray

Anthony,
Thanks so much for the nice comments and I'm glad you enjoyed BRAINDROPS. I really appreciate the input on the iPad routines as this is the first time I've put them in that form in front of magicians or any audience for that matter and I've been curious as to how people would react. I think I need to tighten up the music cues on the ending so people KNOW it is the end. Three black outs in a row with too many extra seconds in between can make an audience "gun shy" and wondering is this really the end or is something else going to happen, but overall I was happy with the shows. Glad you enjoyed the ending. I'm hoping that people pick up on the idea that in the end not only does he hand his brain over to technology but he gives his identity (when he removes his face on the iPad) over to technology as well, and then in the end... when the iPad dies... technology fails leaving him standing in the dark... CURTAIN. However I have a problem of assuming the audience is following the same script that is in my head and often I discover they are getting something totally different. It took about 22 months to put the full show together and after we fine tune it a bit I think it has legs in the college and small theater market...at least I hope so. Thanks for coming and supporting the short run at the Magic Castle. Any relation to the famous Mr. Asimov? |

Hi Paul, I cannot believe it's taken me almost 9 months to respond! This is my first login to the Café in that time and I was delighted to see your response. I am assuming that your performance issues noted above have been resolved in the months following the Castle performances, however, I assure you that I felt the audience was "with you" the entire way. I certainly was, and as I remember the show now months later, and after having seen MANY shows in the Peller Theater since then, your show ranks up there as one of my top 3. Really wonderful material! To answer your question, "Asimov" is only a stage name
