We all have a few! Is it we have the bragging writes to say I have this,or I have that! Are they really worth the price we pay,or the price put on them?
Now,how about a list,of Low cost effects,props,e-books,books,etc...you feel creators have given us at a very reasonable cost, and something we can actually use? Here is one of my favorite effects, and was at a very low, price! Steve Shaw's 'Psychokinetic' 'Touches' (Banachek)

First define high cost low cost, its different for everyone. second some effect are so special that they need to be high cost to keep them out of the hands of youtube exposure. but5 I agree on some of the effects are over priced for what they actually do. for me I want an effect that has mutiple uses. for the most part I buy low price items as I can keep updating and refreshing my performance.

High cost/low cost will have a different meaning to everyone! To some,a $1000.00,may be low cost!
So with that being said,Whoever replies will be stating a low cost by their idea! It really is just a question of what you think is low cost, and has been one of your favorite workers ? I have had people flip over the rubberband with a ring on it! Not a trick question!

My strongest workers are post its and a sharpie.
I do not tend to buy larger props as I am usually working intimate settings. and really do not see the need for the large stage effects. for instance tonight I did a bar setting and used lots of post its lunaria, sanctum 2 filled 45 mins with just those items and got a standing ovation once the shock of "WTF" wore off. for me its not the price but the ability for me to tune the item to work in my personal settings. |

There you go,Michael!
I am going to take my own advice, and get down to a solid 13 effects/routines! But,I have said this for a few, years! LOL Keep making improvements on them, and that is plenty of effects,to do several shows with! And,I am not doing stage, either!

I'm in the process of converting all my worker normal items over to the darker side. I really like how it takes it from a trick to powerful meaningful magic

From a bookkeeping standpoint:
a 150 dollar effect last you your lifetime while a 3 dollar deck only lasts you one performance you need to buy a deck of cards every performance (let's say 1000 in your lifetime) that's 3000 dollar to do your favourite card effects while the 150 dollar effect still stays at 150 dollar. |

I always go through about 3 packs in a couple of hours table hopping... But I don't count cards as effects... They are consumables... Like fl@sh paper and batteries... I think the subject of this thread was more geared towards the list of low cost effects we could all use...

In terms of low price several of the most useful book tomes are incredibly cheap for the material, Practical mental magic and 13 steps both dirt cheap, but contain enough for entire careers. I've enjoyed a lot of Docc Hilford's seminar packages. His session on e'voque and his living dead test were excellent value. Then his scarlet and golden pdf collections have been superb value. But a lot of items I don't look at in terms of price. Paul Voodini's midnight side was a pricey purchase for me even at the pre-release price, but in one performance of it I more than made the money back. It was a good investment. The same goes for a lot of my high cost props they look the part and I'm sure have helped me get additional attention/bookings from looking professional. As it is I have some lovely props, but when it comes down to it I pretty much end up using a few business cards, tarot and pendulums most of the time as my main pieces. All low cost items developed through lots of book material.

Multi Dimensional is not low cost but it is less expensive than when it first came out. And if one just gets the colour cube(the most effective imo), it costs even less. The reason I mention MD is because, for me, it is the most cost effective tool that I have ever owned. It has done me well in sooooo many different situations from stages, parlour shows, one on ones, to an extension to readings that it has probably given back 50x what I paid for it or more.
For a really cost item that is worth much more than the asking price, allow me to recommend Voodini's 3 coins for your thoughts. |

Tony Chris's "Carnival of Magic" has two simple effects that I have used (after changing the concept a bit)hundreds of times.

Tony Chris's "Carnival of Magic" yep I love how he takes old tired workings and twists them to a more usable presentation.

I probably would have to go with a few of my favorite books (13 Steps, Vodou Magic, Scarne on Cards, Mind Reading Card Tricks, etc...). Two were very cheap and two were probably below 30 or so. I learned much from them and was able to adapt much from them. I also have had some great luck with obtaining some cheaper props that have had a huge impact. I have an American Civil War relic shop in my town and have purchased bullets, photos, ink wells, etc... all fairly reasonably priced considering the fact that they are way older than I am. I know those arent effects or books, but they have really made my magic.
The above was for what I enjoy performing but I also teach and use magic with my kids. I have a bunch of cheap stuff that I have incorporated that have brought them much amazement. Nice thread by the way. |
