The list is based off the over all hard hitting impact on the sitters, ease of performance, and over all versatility.
1) lun@ set this is number one because it has never failed to hit hard and kill any doubts. the suspension of disbelief is guaranteed. the sitter is taken to a dark place where emotions are seen to affect everyone. it kills! 2) Cuss C@rds I will admit I was skeptical when I first got them. I did not see them as a tool that would really get them to open up. OH HOW WRONG I WAS! though they achieve a different feeling gthen lun@ they still hit hard. the real power of these is that it gets the sitter to feel empathic connection to the performer that is so strong that they actually will shake and in some cases start to cry in fear that they are hurting the performer. what better way to build a connection with your sitters that will keep them in your mind for a long time. 3) sanctum set includes sanctum 2, 3, Lunaria, and a few others that I have added to this. the real power of sanctum is that ability to get your sitters and all watching to journey with you to a strange land, a strange time, a strange place to see and feel what is being presented. the versatility of these props is enough to create a whole show using nothing but these. you get ability to do drawing dups, hypnosis, synchronized vision, a strong story line that hits hard with mysterious settings. 4) carnie tarot with these you not only get to have a solid tool for doing personal readings, but the ability to see the cards long before they are turned over will lend credibility to your abilities that can not be touched by another prop I have seen so far. the sitter know what tarot are, most have had a reading of some sort in their life, so the mystique is there even if you do not use the added abilities of these. 5) the teller another great reading tool! the benefit here is you never ask the sitter a question, you just know! that hits them. the goose bumps are there. your skill in cold reading and presentation will make these rock. the best thing is with the secret it takes the cold reading and turns it to warm reading as you already know the topic and are that much closer to knowing all. 6) osterlands 13 steps even though this is not a prop it made the list for best purchase because the tools you learn from it are so versatile that you can never really run out of effects and presentations. you can read minds. 7) horosecrets this made the list because it is a no question way of knowing the zodiac sign of your sitter. its low on the list because the way it does it seems almost exact to some other products I have seen. 8) tales of enchantment this is a book that will change how you structure your routines. it breeds creative thinking and stronger performance. 9) isabellas_star this is a fun routine but its a bit more work to get the needed info. once you have it though your ready for some cool hits. I am waiting for some items to come in so this list may change. just my opinions and what is working for me. |

How do you beat something that hits so strong? to make my top list it has to have
1) a strong back story. 2) versatility. 3) ease of method. 4) believability. 5) ability to free flow the presentation to fit the mood of the crowd. 6) the ability to add or take away elements to lengthen or shorten as needed. 7) price verses performance value. there are a few more items that I am waiting on and others I haven't worked with enough to test in the field that might make the list. there are aloso some really great books that I am going through right now that should be on my top 10 book list for mystery performance. but again this list is my personal list fitting my style. it is subjective and may not fit other performers. I am reading arts notorious at the moment and its shaping up to be a great read, I still need to see if I can incorporate this into my sets before I rate it, but the thinking is sound if you choose to take it beyond standard performance. I am curious to see what others here feel are there best purchases. |

Ok having just received the zoltar today the first impression of looks is FUN. its not an aged effect but a retro throw back to the days when the zoltar machines where everywhere. having read the very short book my impression has changed.
it is a complete reading and billet handling tool kit. it takes the fear out of billet handling that a lot of magicians trying to break into mentalism have. if gives a really cool visual distraction that helps get the work done right in front of of the sitters. this one is rated up there on the list as it has multiple uses, is very cost effective, is built to last, has a great researchable back story that takes a the sitter on a nostalgic journey to the past. it can be presented as fun and silly, or a full blown thought reading effect. it can be used light hearted or dark and creepy. got to love versatility baby! |

I gotta agree Michael, L*n@ is the best purchase I have made in DECADES, let alone this year. I bought all three books, and they arrived on the 6th. Today is the 10th, and I showed my building's maintainance supervisor my 1936 book, and we did an experiment. Easy? Oh, I wish I had known about this earlier!
This is a reputation maker! I'm getting P*@rly G@tes to round out the collection. I believe I will have the most powerful presentation I have ever had in forty years of magic! It only gets better... Doug |

It is all about the reaction of the spectator, as long as they can confirm your hits it doesn't matter which language the presentation uses... I have been told it is more powerful being in a "foreign" language... When you describe what you "see" in your audiences language and then reveal that the book confirms this in English the effect is just as good...

Thanks Tim, the problem is 90% of Spaniards will not be good subjects because they will not understand very well what is written in the book. I supose I can ask for a volunteer with good english...
I'll purchase Luna just for the fun of having it, but I'll think about giving it a try... Thanks Tim

For the hits that are not dates and numbers, you can always suggest initials--and names (while foreign) are still easily recognized and read. You may have to give up some of the 'deep' hits on mental states and treatments (unless you have a spec with some English--or you can always spell out the English words for them to check letter-by-letter: El hombre es A-N-G-R-Y. ¿Ve usted esa palabra?), but I do believe that LVN@ will work well in any country that uses (or recognizes) the Roman alphabet and Arabic numerals. I found out last night in a group of ten people how powerful just 1936 is! Some people really get upset if they think you can get inside their head. The sitter last night was a 21/22 year old girl who was skeptical at first. Almost joking about it. She got upset and left! The owner of the house said I scared her! The rest of the group was pretty blown away as well. Friends you can read about it, but you never really know the impact until you've DONE IT! I now am going to be very careful to bring them "down" after such a trek into the unknown. To finish with a lighter note. It got REAL dark last night! Even I had the chills at one point! Doug |

Doug,
now you have felt the tip of the iceberg with dark mentalism brother. we can take things so much deeper then we are used to. the impact is huge. I must reiterate that you really need to have a come down period to give them a chance to breath. you just gut punched them. this period can make or break the performance. let them feel let them express, let them share with you and the others. this builds bonds that will last a life time. you will be the magician that old guys saw 30 years ago that made such an impact that he was never forgotten. the reverse is true also. if you do not give them a safe place to return to you will give them fear and hatred towards you. your build up and cool off phase is the most important in this and many routines of this nature. |
