The box shown below is a work in progress and is shown here unfinished. This box still need the lid to be cut free of its base and the box need finishing. I will be further distressing this finish so it will genuinely look old.
This box was made from approximately 50 year old naturally worm eaten pine something that you can not fake. While there are a few methods for fake worm holes nothing looks like the real thing. The process used at the start of this project began about four years ago when I discovered a the wood that would later become this box. First process was to allow the wood to dry some in the open air then this wood was dried in a kiln. Insect killer was before and after the drying process to stop any additional damage from any bugs that may be remaining. Then the wood was cleaned and prepped for working. Most of the boxes I have made in the past have a side wall of roughly a half inch. However the pine used to build the sides of this box is 3/4” thick, because it was an old piece of lumber and a bit soft in some places from the natural bug and water damage I decided to use the additional wall thickness to give the box additional strength. Normally the box would have a normal wall thickness of half an inch or less depending on the size of box that I am building. The engraving that is shown on the top of this box was done with a 12” x 20” 80 watt laser engraver. The laser tube on this machine is about 4 foot long. The depth of the engraving is reasonably deep as it can easily be felt when a finger is ran across its surface. Here are the photos of the box in its current state. http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1362.jpg Side Views http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1363.jpg http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1364.jpg http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1365.jpg http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1366.jpg View of Top http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......1368.jpg Here the is original image that the top of this box was laser engraved from. http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa120......le-1.jpg The box measures 9” x 9” x 6.5” tall. Now that you can see that we have finally got the laser engraver dialed in and doing what we want it too. |

Wow! Love the engraving. Will you varnish or coat the engraving in any way and will this reduce the visibility of it? Great choice of image too
I say in 200 words what most people say in 20.

Yes I will coat this box using a stain clear to make it look old and while its not all that easy to do the engraving will still show up and look better. The key is to make sure the finish is applied correctly which is a skill when finishing engraved wood. You may have seen some other peoples work that have tried to coat engraved images that just do not look right. I should shoot a demo video on this technique at some point but as of right now that's a closely guarded secret.
The finial photo should be ready by morning. Time to get back to work. |
