You know those pens that detect fake money? You make a little mark on the bill and it's a different color if it's fake. You can get them at office depot.
Make a comment like you have seen some counterfeit bills going around and ask if you can borrow one. Say that you have a pen that will check if it is real. "Accidentally" push the pen all the way through the bill. What do you think? |

Not bad! This is one effect I don't use any patter with. I just borrow a bill, pull the pen from my pocket and jam it in. The reaction is always "Hey, what are you doing." And when they get the bill back unharmed, they are astonished!

Yeah, this is the type of trick that at first I don't use any patter. But after they see that the bill is fine I repeat the effect but in a different and more visual manner. While I do this I explain how the bill is penetrated using the Garrett Thomas line of how they get the word penetrated. "The pen is atrating the bill." It gets a few laughs.

I like your idea, redstreak. It adds more motivation to the effect than just the usual "Hey, check out this cool thing I can do."
Are you going to use a purchased pen gimmick, or make your own out of an Office Depot money pen? |

I like to use mine in the start of a signed bill to impossible location effect.
I bring out the pen saying that I need to put an identifying mark on the bill. I then push the pen through the bill and say, "I didn't say I was going to write on the bill."

You just have to use a normal pen thru dollar and use that patter, I think it would be too hard to make your own or have someone do it custom.

When I bought the pen the guy who sold it to me told me to look at the black dot (I think its the crest) on the American dollar bill. He then tapped it with the end of the pen and told me "The only way you can tell whether your bill is fake aside from burning it is”, (Stab!), “right here."
The whole idea of concentrating on the dot really got me. It also seems to work when I try it on other people. Although I haven't had much of a chance in Canada as all the bills don't have any similar markings. |

I tell spectators the ones who make counterfeit money have outsmarted the counterfeit markers. I tell them pens work better. Next, I do the routine and tell them if it would have torn, it would of been counterfeit money. I should end up showing a few bills that are torn, and mention these are counterfeit.

I use a similar presentation as Payne,… wanting the spectator to sign the bill for an impossible location trick. Except I tell them not to hold the bill in their hand when they sign it because they might tear the bill. Then I show the pen through the bill, tear it out, and give it to them to sign the bill with. I like this because they still get to examine the pen but it's not as blatant as "here now look at how normal the pen is."

I like the presentation. I’ll try it out.
