Paul is tremendous. An outstanding storyteller and speaker, amazingly well-read. He also happens to be a trained anthropologist and debate champion.
Here's a taste of his incredible range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jNVicfIpf4 This Sunday will be a full lecture specifically on Cold Reading. |

Penguin sent out a reminder and Acar shared this:
"Paul told me a great story just now about how flying to our studio today, he knew all sorts of things about the lady sitting next to him on the plane without her saying a word. He does it now without even trying. This is the same stuff you see featured in the latest Sherlock Holmes movies. It's part deduction, part observation and a TON of insight about people". |

The lecture starts in 30 min. Penguin says they will have the first 20 minutes of the lecture on the homepage if you want a free preview as to what it's like.

We have Dr. appointments today, but I'm going to watch it later today and will post some thoughts.
I was able to watch the first 20 min yesterday and Paul did a cold read for a young lady with a regular deck of cards. He explained why he doesn't use tarot cards and it made perfect sense. The system he taught was actually very simple and he was so accurate on her reading. He did mention working an event with other magicians and they would stroll around looking for people to perform. Paul just sets up for his reads at the same event and gets a line of people. lol. Work smarter not harder! |

I watched it. I'd never seen any of the "Penguin Live" things before, but I wanted to check it out because I've run into Paul from time to time, and he seemed like he'd have some interesting things to say.
He did, and there was a good deal to be learned from his lecture. He did readings for two people -- one with playing cards, and one with an archetype-based tic sheet that he devised. These were real-time, unrehearsed, and done under fire... and you could tell, because the first one was far from an ideal situation. It was for a young woman who, by her own admission, was not the sort of person who would ever have a reading done in "real life." Furthermore, the cards that happened to come up for her would have been great for a poker player, but were less than fantastic for a reader. The most valuable part of that was seeing how Paul handled such a situation, and it was where his professionalism and confidence really came through. Where many others would have crashed and burned, he made it work, and turned it into a valuable object lesson in how to deal with those kinds of challenging situations. His approach relies not on sneaky ways of racking up hits, but on knowing how to relate to people and be a genuinely caring, knowledgeable, interesting person. Much of what he discussed were ideas that anyone interested in readings should already be familiar with, but they were peppered with new angles or bits of knowledge that kept making me think, "Oh, that was really good, I need to remember that." These are things that are valuable not only for readers and mentalists, but for performers of any stripe, and in fact for anyone interested in promoting themselves and upgrading their life. Near the end he politely declined a request to do some spoon bending, on the grounds that that wasn't what he was there for. I appreciated that, and his response increased my respect for him. However, he did demonstrate (without explanation) a card-matching effect that either entailed a fair degree of luck, or else fooled me completely.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I went to write up my thoughts, but Quinn hit all the points.
I've done "The Cube" readings for years, which isn't cold reading ( it's a short personality test ). So, I was very interested in this lecture. I was familiar with Paul Draper from various TV shows and his youtube video, but I was very impressed at how quickly he was able to take something than can be fairly complicated as cold reading and boil it down to a simple formula to go out and try with a deck of playing cards. Paul was an Anthropology Professor at UNLV and his teaching experienced showed. He touched on much more than doing readings, but in performing magic in general and connecting with people. So this is much more than a lecture on just cold reading. That card trick at the end was pretty amazing. He had two sets of 5 cards, Ace through 5 ( suits don't matter ). Nathan Kranzo ( great lecture host ) chose a pile, and mixed them up. Paul placed a card face down and Nathan chose ANY card and placed it face up on top of Paul's card. that's sequence of Paul placing a card face down first, they did with 4 cards. The last card, Paul placed it aside by Nathan and Nathan put his last card down. They matched. Paul showed that the single pile of cards all matched. Not sure if it's 100% all the time ( they didn't discuss it ) but it was impressive. BIG thumbs up on the lecture. |

Fantastic. To be honest, I don't do cold or hot reading in my shows really, however there was MUCH to gain from thinking about how to influence people and gain their agreement. Lots of fantastic tips and thoughts in the Q&A that really applied to where I am at professionally. Great lecture even despite the fact I will never do any of the material presented. Worth watching twice.
