A thorough knowledge of your chosen profession is essential to succeed. This knowledge does not just materialise as if by 'magic' but is learnt. Some things you can learn in college with a tried and tested curriculum for your chosen subject but others are somewhat esoteric. An illusionist combines many disciplines to apply his craft and the younger you are when you realise that this is the path you wish to follow in life, the easier it is and the more likely you are to attain some modicum of happiness, fulfilment and success along the way. Please do not forget that Copperfield, who you mentioned in your previous post, is no longer a striving teenager and has had several decades to learn his trade and get to where he is now. If he had been discouraged enough as a teenager to change the course of his life it would have been a sad loss for the magic world as it stands today. Thankfully he followed his dream. *** Dennis Michael's posts have shown understanding and been informative and encouraging for any budding illusionist. Even in pointing out the immense expense involved in creating a self contained show from scratch. Any intelligent person (and there are as many intelligent teenagers as older people) will realise that transport, lighting, sound etc can be hired when necessary. A fertile mind can create a powerful illusion out of a few yards of fabric or a few sheets of cardboard to cut down on initial costs. Extra assistants/stage hands may be found among family, friends or amateur dramatics (don't forget, we are not talking Vegas yet... leave that till next week!) Dennis' posts will spark imagination and ingenuity, not a feeling of hopelessness or inadequacy. Well-done Dennis. |

Thank you Rip and Richard,
A simple illusion like a table with a BA cloth and another cloth raised by an assistant can produce an instance appearance. Cost...Price of the cloth. (and a table one can stand on. Illusions don't all have to be expensive, however, the audience expects "BIG TRICKS".

Point well taken Dennis. I have rented large illusions to produce a CEO and yet produce 6 of them behind a 90" silk to more response.
Go for it guys. Just remember to learn the business with the show.

There are 2 basic types of people in the stage magic community. People who concieve and build illusions, and those who perform them. I would desperately love to have my own show. I dream it, and am always thinking about it. I do not think it will ever be a reality, because I do so many other things. I am 17, and already finished with college. Because I cannot perform them, I have written a complete script for a potential show, and created a vast amount of illusions. What I plan on doing is drawing detailed plans (or even building them) and selling them to other teenage magicians. It is very rewarding to see somthing you created go big time! (hopefully) Because shows do take a massive amount of money down to produce, I think I will always be an illusion builder for those already established. I do encourage you do try your hardest, and never let your vision die. Mine has never died, but it has been modified to be more practical. Thanks!

I'm a 15 year old msgician and just been brought a zigzag illusion by my parents. Which is great, my first chance to perform illusions. But the only unfortunate thing is that my mom now wants to be my assistant in the my act. But how uncool is it to have your mom as your assistant. I want an assistant my own age, I have never ever seen a magician zig zag his mom or saw her in half It's just not cool and its not fair. If I say no than I am not allowed to perform, its as though ,my parents don't trust me.

I don't think it is about they don't trust you. They are trying to help you. When it comes to having an assistant your age you better make sure she is tall enough to fit into the box to make sure the effect is worth it. Your mom maybe able to pull it off then a 15 year old girl can. Also they might just be helping that way you don't have to spend money out front to get an assistant. They are trying to help. Don't look at it as being un-cool or not fair. Look at how you can use this opportunity to your advantage.
best Michael

Welcome to showbiz kid.
For every bonus ( like having a major illusion purchased for you ) there is a price to pay. If you want to do the magic your way then give the prop back and spend your own money to buy a prop. You'll then have the freedom to do as you please. Gee ...maybe you don't have it so bad do you? Seriously......let mom do it and she'll eventually get bored with it and you'll be free to use other assitants. If you were a smart performer you'd encorporate your mother into the theme of the act. Be original and use this great opportunity you have been given. Best, Tim |

Hi Walsall
Thank-you for your kind comments. Again the tiltle is a contributing factor to my publicity. It can't be everything otherwise I will be out of a job come July when there will be a new Young Magician of the Year. But of course it helped me get established and secure work and TV appearances in the early days. You must never let one thing make you bookable otherwise what are you going to do if that is taken away from you. Of course there are many exceptions to this rule but if you think in the way I suggest you are constantly improving many factors of your act, profesionalism and buisness skills. Again just some of my thoughts Paul |

Zig-Zagging your mom could actually be absolutely hilarious under the right circumstances. You could even start to walk away, leaving her in it. Then you make her "negotiate" on stage for her release. I would actually take her up on her proposition if I were you, Magicoz. Then again, that is just how I think. And I would also like to say welcome to the world of illusions, and welcome to the Café as well.

Hi magicoz,
Nick Fox has the perfect answer for you. Your mom does not have to be part of the whole act but could bring on the Zig Zag at the end wrapped in brown paper as if the postman has just delivered it and gets roped into testing it out... could provide some great comedy! Enjoy your new 'toy' and the beat of luck in your budding career. |

If you do go with getting an assistant your age at some point you should also make sure its someone who enjoys doing it. Don't just use your girlfriend because you have one if she's not into it. It will totally show on stage when the girl doesn't know what to do up there and she's staring off into space or just slumps around. Look into maybe talking with some girls in your drama department at your school so you know they will have confidence and know how to move about the stage. You'll want to be careful of how tall your assistant actually is too. If she's as tall as you that's fine but any taller and it'll look odd, that's just my opinion. And please don't dress her in rediculous outfits either, if she's not Britney Spears don't make her dress like it if you know what I mean. Just keep in appropriate it all I'm saying, but then again I'm more conservative than some...

Hi to all,
I was just browsing the Café and noticed the that a guy said it was uncool to have his mom as an assistant in his act. When I was younger I used my mom as my assistant( she also provided the transport!). Although I did't perform big illusions, she was invaluble part of my act. I'm sure other people use there parents as assistants as well. brin |

Let me add something quite unpopular.
NOT ALL MAGICIANS ARE CREATED EQUAL. Not everyone who can afford the props belongs in front of an audience. We have some great examples in Branson of this just come watch. As for the age, I don't think it is particularly an advantage or disadvantage, except in the limited amount of time you have had to amass knowlege. But often just talent can overcome such obstacles. So let me say that ANY magician regardless of age, sex, or creed, once they start charging money for a show has to live up to a certain standard. OR THEY HURT THE ART. I don't want to hear ever again, "oh he is pretty good for 14", when I pay 25 bucks to go see the show. No when you charge, you better bring it. Also the clone thing is really a problem. Be yourself. Use Criss Angel as a roll model only for the way he is "unique" or was unique till everyone coppied him. So of course it can be done, but should it always be done is the question.

Actually to get completly off track, Criss had a stage show LONG before TV.
Not the point, the point was he is not a "cookie cutter" performer. Like him or not he is unique.
