I need some help in purchasing an extra box...like the one shown here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v228/N......a5b2.gif Are these sold separately? If so, where might I find one? Best Magical Regards, Mark Williams

Hi Mark.
I bought a Strat-o-Spheres from (Parctical Magic) the best there is. They didn't supply a box like the Mak version. I use my change bag to make the three balls appear and use it to make the extra colour ball disappear. Tricky Ricky |

It's called a Gung Ho box, and is sold as part of the Strat-o-Spheres set. I think it even comes with the Joker Tube version. I don't think it comes with the Priority Balls version.
The best way to find one on it's own, will be to ask on the "Let's Make a Magic Deal" area. Tim Sonefelt (Wonder Imagery) sells a Gung Ho Box seperately for use with a different trick, but the load chamber is not the same size. Duane Laflin used to sell a vanish cloth for the extra ball, but I don't see it on the Laflin Magic Store website just now (the website is run by Duane's son, David). - Donald

Wack-o-Magic sells a Devils hank the right size for vanishing a stratosphere ball...
I'm not sure where to buy a Gung Ho box by itself in the right size.. but it wouldn't surprise me if someone would part with it.. it's not a very good vanish.. |

Mark, contact Mak magic. Although I've never seen them sold separately, they may be able to work something out for you. Also, you may want to post a "Looking For Gung Ho Box" in the sell and trade area here. Maybe someone has one...never know!
Good luck!

Hi Mark,
Have you possibly considered using a Pat Page "Hanky Panky Cloth?" It's a superb itility prop produced by Pat Page's family on their website at http://www.patrickpagemagic.co.uk Best wishes, Lester |

The Pat Page Hanky Panky cloth is to small for the large balls Strat-O-Sphere uses.

Here is something different you may or may not like to use with Strat-o-sphere.
Abbotts Shenanigan Die Box There is a Demo Video to see the Shenanigan Die Box change the ball into a Die. This page has the Regular Die Box and Jumbo Die Box listed http://www.abbottmagic.com/searchquick-s......+Die+Box Direct link to Regular Die Box http://www.abbottmagic.com/Abbotts-Shena......oryId=-1 If the link doesn't work, try . . . http://www.abbottmagic.com Type in a search: Shenanigan Die Box |

If you are set on a Shenanigan box check with Hocus Pocus I traded in the one I had.
Also if you want an original Mak Strat-o-sphere box I have an old one that needs a paint job. Drop me a PM and I can give you details.

Easily make a small square circle to vanish the ball in.

Now comes the rant:
Where is the MAGIC in this effect? The magic in the strat-o-sphere is in the movement of the balls from one place to another in a narrow tube. It's a VERY straight forward effect that is difficult to patter, the magic is VERY VERY good... but the props are not very conducive to interesting story telling. However.. what is NOT important? The moment the ball vanishes. This is the LEAST important part of the routine.... it's a throw away moment to get to the finale of the routine... the fact that the ball is (hopefully if you do the routine properly) back to it's proper place.. Adding another prop (the box) was an easy way to make the ball (admittedly bulky) vanish. What you DON'T want to do is add anotgher whole routine.. a die box or a square circle. It's not necessary and it makes the wonderful magic of the strat-0-sphere routine much less powerful. It makes the entire 2nd third of the effect about vanishing the ball... when the 2nd 3rd of the effect is about the ball going to is proper place. We need to remember that there is a PURPOSE AND GOAL to every effect. Some can do well with adding other stuff... some can make a wonderful series of routines, getting back to the original effect for a wonderful finale. I don't think that the Strat-o-Sphere is that effect. It's not simple magic to follow.... and it carries it's own finale with the balls going back in order. To muddle it up is doing a disservice to the wonderful magic. Ideally, the vanish would be done with something as easy as a topit, but the ball is a bit big for that... and many people don't topit their clothes for whatever reason. |

In other words:
With every one of your magic effects --stand back look at it as if you've never seen the prop --ask "what is this about?" --what's the premise or theme? --what is the magical moment? --why would I care what it's about? --whey should the audience care about it? --Should I keep it in my act? --if so, how do I do it in a clear and interesting way? Step back, ask hard questions, and you'll have a much better show to sell. |

Great advice from a MASTER showman! You really need to read “Tales of Enchantment: The Art of Magic” by Walt Anthony. Walt just gave you a taste. Copy and print his post above and tack it to the wall. Read it every time you think about doing magic.
That book changed my LIFE! I will forever be thankful! Doug |

Regarding giving the trick a purpose, Jim Kleefeld has a nice spin with his Johnny Appleseed routine.

I use this in most of my 5 to 6 year old b-day shows.
And it works well. But the story is what makes the routein work. Todd |

YES Todd! A compelling story is often what makes the routine work.
